This book is an absolute gem!! The writing is friendly and knowledgeable, and the design of the book is just perfect. I highly recommend this book! A+

We loved the first edition and now love this one even more! Quick and easy facts for great eats, no matter what part of town you live in. Plus it covers all those hip places that you only ever hear about later - wonderful little specialty stores and suppliers. Want a "local" gift? It doesn't get more local than this -- written and published by L.A. folks and featuring all local (non-chain) restaurants and shops.

This book gives thorough coverage of all the best things of food-related interest in the L.A. area, from modest to upscale. What sets it apart is that it includes those wonderful little restaurants and local finds that are so often missing from other major restaurant guides. If you like to follow food blogs and such, this book includes all of the places most loved and puts them together in a book that is well organized and easy to use. It is grouped by neighborhood - important in a city this big and also by categories so you can find specialty grocers, wine stores and more. I think this is a fabulous book to have if you love food.

Got this reference to use in addition to Yelp, Chowhound, LAMAG reviews, etc., for a 4-day trip eating all over Los Angeles. Liked the fun writing style and format is real easy to use and cross reference with index. Tons of restaurants to choose from. Convenient compact size. Maybe only wish included a few basic maps? Also, perhaps some tables in the back with hours, reservations or not, etc. (perhaps this info is better checked online, to be up to date?).

I bought this book when I first moved to LA because the sheer number of restaurants in this city is overwhelming. This book does a reasonably good job of narrowing the field and providing a good starting point for exploring what LA has to offer. I especially like that in addition to restaurants, the book provides listings for groceries, farmers markets, kitchen equipment retailers, and other specialty shops.

But you should really treat the book as a starting point, and not as some kind of comprehensive compendium with Zagat-like reviews. Some of the recommendations in the book are real gems, but some are decidedly not. I now cross-reference recommendations from the book with Jonathan Gold's restaurant reviews, which are available on-line.

I have used many restaurant guides like Zagat, Yelp, etc. This book is the easiest format and I like how it divides LA into sections. Also there are sections for best dinner, brunch, etc. The descriptions are very accurate and concise on each suggested restaurant and I usually use the recommendations to order a signature dish at the location.

I have always tried to find dining establishments in the South Bay without success. Now I have one book that I can take with me to decide where to eat.

I have lived in LA for 10 years and this book has some hidden spots that I did not know. I intend on trying out every restaurant in the book.

Very helpful when it comes to the "where do you want to do for dinner" question. Nice to see some of our favorites are in it and we're having fun trying new places to eat!
