More About the Author

Kate grew up in London, England, and at a very early age began telling stories to her school friends while huddling in bomb shelters during the Blitz of WW II. She moved to the U.S. in 1963 and published her first book in 1987. Since then she's written over sixty romance and mystery novels. She lives in Oregon with her husband, Bill. Her "upstairs/downstairs" mysteries appeal to fans of Downton Abbey. The Pennyfoot books are set in Edwardian England, while the Manor House books take place in an English village during WW II. To give you a bit of background, these books are set in southeastern England in 1906, Cecily Sinclair is the owner of a seaside hotel called the Pennyfoot Hotel. She is the sole owner of the hotel after becoming a widow about a year ago. She has a manager, Baxter, who promised her late husband to watch over both the hotel and her. He plays a heavy role in running the hotel but his idea of what a proper lady should do is different from Cecily's. She is very progressive in her ideas about women's equality and that doesn't necessarily set well with the more conservative manager's ideas. There is a fair about of interaction between these two characters which causes me to laugh a bit and is humorous.

This time out, the social Season is just about to begin and a prominent London family is returning to the hotel to rest prior to the whirlwind to come. When one of the wives turns up dead, wrapped in the May Pole, everyone assumes the gypsies of the area are at fault and the culprit will be apprehended quickly. A few of the pieces of the puzzle don't quite fit together in Cecily's mind and she isn't content with the speed of the investigation so she starts asking some questions of her own. There are also two subplots in the book, one involving a guest at the hotel and another involving one of the staff. The sprinkling in of these two smaller mysteries adds a lot to the novel and was a nice touch by the author.

A charming cast of characters (the staff is full of amusing folks), a quaint sea-side setting, and bit of a mystery add up to quite an enjoyable read. Definitely for those who enjoy a meander through a slower-paced, more gentle story versus fast-paced and intense - this is a true "cozy

Bottom line: Better than the last book which I gave 4 stars to. This one rates a full 5 stars and I would highly recommend this series to fans of the genre.

Kindle needs to add all of the Pennyfoot Mysteries to their library. They have the first six of the series which are all fun reads. We have the first ones and the last couple in print but we are missing the middle!

Fun way to spend a quiet afternoon or night. Character's are believable and varied, each with a charm all their own. A nice escape from the serious cares of modern day life.

The time period is long before I came along, but I feel I could have been there, the descriptions are that well written. The characters are real, have real flaws. I am reading these out of sequence, which I did not think I wanted to do, but as they become available on Kindle, I will get them and read them, even if they are out of order.

Excellent book, just like all of Kate Kingsbury's pennyfoot hotel mysteries. I can't wait for the next book to come out.

Of course this is another great page turning mystery as only Kingsbury can keep her series followers nose buried to keep reading until the last page. Really interesting how this book keep me guessing as to who when of course at the end it is so in your face and you think I should have keep to my first guess. The Pennyfort has the staff to keep you interested in the activities of the Inn and the daily life of each one and the what will the future hold to Cecily and Baxter.
