5.0 out of 5 stars Great Update!
I love that Eat Out, Eat Right is small enough to fit into your purse or in your briefcase (or glove compartment) because that's what it's all about--being prepared when you're dining out--so take it along. It's so smartly organized that you can open it quickly to the type of restaurant you're considering and get exactly what you need to know to make smart choices...

1.0 out of 5 stars A high carb diet for a diabetic? This is bad advice!
I scanned this book at a local bookstore and noticed that the nutrition advice was to eat lots of carbohydrates! This advice contradicts that of Dr. Bernstein who authored Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars.

Dr. Bernstein's books are the bibles for Type I and Type II diabetics. He advocates low-carb dieting...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Update!, February 24, 2008
This review is from: Eat Out, Eat Right: The Guide to Healthier Restaurant Eating (Paperback)
I love that Eat Out, Eat Right is small enough to fit into your purse or in your briefcase (or glove compartment) because that's what it's all about--being prepared when you're dining out--so take it along. It's so smartly organized that you can open it quickly to the type of restaurant you're considering and get exactly what you need to know to make smart choices. Kudos to Hope and her publisher for this updated third version, because it pays to be prepared when dining out, and as she notes in her "Trends" chapter, that's what Americans are doing with increasing frequency.

Hope doesn't tell us not to eat out--she tells us HOW to eat out and stay healthy, too. The book begins by defining what a healthy diet is, and then shows the readers how to translate goals into dining skills and strategies. Hope has a deliberate mind--and guides the reader first by showing us how restaurants make it so easy to gain weight and then showing better options. Each cuisine is first defined and described, then we see a 'nutrition snapshot', which can be really scary! We learn 'green flag' and 'red flag' preparation terms (very valuable and once learned makes menu reading extremely simple--you can zero in on best dishes when you know the lingo), and I especially like the 'May I take your order' sections, with best sample meals and nutritional analyses.

And don't forget beverages, and so many diners do. Coffee drinks and alcoholic beverages can be diet dilemmas, demonstrated here--with ideas for lowering fat and sugar, and calories.

Fast food isn't all created equal--and from salad bars and soups to Thai, Deli and even fine-dining, readers learn the difference between a nutrition nightmare and an acceptable entrée or side dish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compact, easy-to-carry healthy restaurant eating guide has it all!, February 22, 2008
This review is from: Eat Out, Eat Right: The Guide to Healthier Restaurant Eating (Paperback)
Wow! I got my copy of Eat Out, Eat Right and I'm not letting it go. The book was recommended on my online weight loss program. As a traveling salesman who is on highways and in metro areas days...and plenty of nights, this book is both an eye-opener and an able assistant. The book divulges the gory nutrition facts of the sandwiches, burgers, and ethnic favorites I consumed too often. I had no clue that foods I thought were OK choices -tuna sandwich, fish sandwich, Caesar salad, sweet and sour pork, chicken quesadilla and more - are loaded with fat and calories. Eat Out, Eat Right's healthy restaurant eating skills are teaching me how to choose healthy foods and control portions...oh yes, a difficult task. Plenty of practical tips and tactics fill the pages of cuisines-specific chapters, from sandwich shops to burger joints and my ethnic favorites of Mexican and Chinese. The book's home is now my glove compartment!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for those who eat out frequently, February 21, 2008
This review is from: Eat Out, Eat Right: The Guide to Healthier Restaurant Eating (Paperback)
This book is a "must read" for those who eat out frequently and are mindful of healthy eating. The third edition has just been published.

Hope Warshaw, MMSe, RD, CDE does a masterful job of providing practical and realistic guidelines for making healthier menu choices from a wide variety of foods and cuisines, which includes information on popular fast-casual restaurants such as Applebee's and Chili's.

The book which is in paperback is compact and easy to take with you when traveling or just eating out! Happy and healthy dining.

I really appreciate that Hope makes practical suggestions and healthier modifications for most foods on a menu. It's not one of those "No NEVER EAT THAT AGAIN" books! It cover's numerous cuisines. Love the handy, small size! I will keep my copy in my glove compartment. I always thought this book was only for people with Diabetes. It is for them AND ANYONE that wants to know how to eat more healthy while eating out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep this book in your purse or backpack!, March 6, 2008
This review is from: Eat Out, Eat Right: The Guide to Healthier Restaurant Eating (Paperback)
This book is filled with information that will help you navigate menus and food preparation techniques when you are eating away from home while achieving both great health and great tasting food. Those two goals are not mutually exclusive, and Hope gives you the keys to achieving both outcomes.

I found the specific requests and questions she lists in order to help you pleasantly and assertively communicate your food desires to the servers to be especially helpful. No one wants "to make a scene" while ordering food, so Hope's background as a registered dietitian and educator plus being a professionally trained chef gives one confidence that her recommendations are easy for you to say, easy for the waiter to understand, and easy for the kitchen to execute.

The book's small size is a plus for keeping this wealth of information handy in your purse or book bag. However, the small size does mean that those of us over age 40 will need to have our reading glasses handy, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up-to-date, accurate and easy to read!, April 9, 2008
This review is from: Eat Out, Eat Right: The Guide to Healthier Restaurant Eating (Paperback)
I thought Hope Warshaw's previous edition was superb, then this one came along to do even better. It is an excellent summary of restaurant info and healthy eating tips for the average person. I especially appreciated her down to earth explanations of lingo for various ethnic cuisines. Because Hope Warshaw is a Registered Dietitian, we can trust that her information is accurate and balanced. On top of all of that, the book is physically perfect...the right size to fit in a purse or book bag, the right feel to make you want to hold it, and the right font to make it appealing to the eye! If you have this healthy dining book, you really need no other!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for anyone who eats out, March 20, 2008

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Eat Out, Eat Right: The Guide to Healthier Restaurant Eating (Paperback)
This is a handy book for anyone who eats out. My favorite part is the suggested meals to order for each type of restaurant (Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Pizza, etc.). The author's tips are practical and straightforward. I like that she makes it possible to eat well when eating out by choosing the right foods, instead of discouraging eating out altogether.

My husband loves Mexican food and so that chapter was especially helpful to me in finding healthier foods to order. It was also a good reminder to avoid the chips!

I like the Healthy Eating Guidelines at the beginning of the book that can be put into use at home as well as eating out. She includes tips for choosing healthy options for kids as well. With the increase of children eating out on a regular basis, this section is especially helpful. It's a great book full of useful information that I highly recommend to anyone!

With this book the challenge of eating out is much easier. Each chapter covers a different cuisine - so makes it useful for a variety of people. I recommend it to my clients as a good reference book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pint-sized and packed with information!, March 4, 2008
This review is from: Eat Out, Eat Right: The Guide to Healthier Restaurant Eating (Paperback)
This book is pint-sized and packed with information. It is designed with "ease of reference" in mind by being both easy to carry and easy to find the information you need. It is clear that Ms. Warshaw has put her heart and soul into this book; she really wants to help people enjoy dining out and eating healthy at the same time. Eat Out, Eat Right is filled with sound advice and the strategies to put the advice into practice. There are even worksheets in the book to help you understand your behaviors and how you can change them. The meal comparisons are eye-opening and really tie all of the "how-to" advice together. Great book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sectioned into Food Categories, October 28, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Eat Out, Eat Right: The Guide to Healthier Restaurant Eating (Paperback)
At first I was a little taken back by this book. From the postings I thought it would include a complete listing of restaurants and their nutrition charts. To my surprise it was "chunked" into different sections - Chinese, Thai, Italian, etc. From here, it went on to explain what's good to eat in each food category along with words to avoid (fried, alfredo, etc). It was helpful since pasta dishes use very different words to describe their food options than Chinese dishes.
Another tip I was provided in a seminar was to review the menu before you visit the restaurant. This allows extra time to review the nutritional value of the dishes you are interested in. This has helped me save a lot of calories!
