Haas, a celebrity nutritionist and author of Eat To Win (Rawson Assocs., 1984) and Eat To Succeed (Dutton, 1987), promotes the idea that appropriate use of nutrients and dietary supplements will allow us to reach our peak physical and intellectual levels. Haas presents chapters that focus on waking up one's brain, losing weight, enhancing sex, sleeping, developing muscles, and improving memory and cognition with the help of nutrients. Read by Haas, each chapter contains a comprehensive list of nutrients and dietary supplements, recipes for incorporating these supplements, and the best times of day to ingest them. Although current biochemical technology has provided some understanding of nutrient functions, much in this area remains unknown; indeed, the Food and Drug Administration recently limited the health claims used in promoting vitamins and nutrients. Haas's advice on the use of food and supplements alleged to improve mental growth and acuity and slow the aging process is hard to digest. The information, delivered by the author, does not translate well to audio. The experience is somewhat like listening to the rapid reading of a chemistry textbook. Listeners will need a large dose of the "smart nutrients" if they're to comprehend this densely packed text. B.V. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
