Though this book is modest and is filled with silly cartoons, the information inside is fantastic. A friend recommended it to me years ago when I first got sick with Chonic Fatigue. I wish I had read it then. My husband and I take it with us everywhere, use the recipes and generally use it as a ref. book all the time. We both feel sig. better as a result of the info.

this book tells it like it is... we are truly what we eat.. and when we eat... and how we eat... although i hated the cartoony pictures I loved this book. it isn't a diet book, it is a way of looking at food book. it doesn't make you give up anything that is good for you. it doesn't make you count calories or weigh things.. it shows you all the workings of the digestive system in an easy to understand format. the best part is after eating alive for 4 weeks I felt like I was a new person. my eyes arre brighter, my skin is clearer, my sleep is better, my weight is down (15lbs!) and my energy is through the roof. try it... you will definately like it!

My all time favourite book on health through diet. This book has answered literally dozens of questions that I have had about eating for health, and has removed almost all of my confusion about "the right way to eat".

Eating Alive was a wonder to read. The book was filled with useful information on health. And while some people may not like cartoony pictures to illustrate points, i found they highlighted his sometimes humorous writing nicely and helped me absorb some of his concepts nicely. I must admit that I'm still not nearly as healthy as I'd like to be, but I don't fault eating alive or his new book for that- it has more to do with not following his guidelines for extended periods of time due to various reasons. To sum up, this book, along with his new one, are in my opinion the best books on health for the common consumer ever.

Eating Alive: Prevention Thru Good Digestion
This book is truely incredible. Its worth its weight in gold for the recipes alone! And like everyone else said, I learned an awful lot about how the body works. After a year in Afghanistan, at the age of 51, being a female and carrying all that weight, I came home 1.5 inches shorter. Needless to say, I had a lot of aches and pains, especially when I started back at my desk job, cause my muscles atrophied. My hips felt like they were shoved right into my pelvic bones, and xrays showed I lost a lot of cartledge all over my body. So, this diet and good old fashioned exercise cleared up ALL MY PAIN. And I figured out that I was also allergic to sulfates. The book has you give up sugar, caffiene, perservatives, yeast, alcohol, in the first 2-3 week diet, and cuts down a lot on salt. So, I have to admit, I cheated a little with wine on the weekends, and hence my hips and lower back hurt a lot those days!! So I figured out that I can not have sulfates. So, if I do cheat with a little wine from time to time, I now know that I can only drink wine with NO sulfates, or very little... And this seems to make a huge difference. Also due to the diet, my blood pressure came WAY down. As we have high blood pressure in my family, and Im at that age, where it was starting to show up. My Dr. told me that if I didnt control it, she would put me on meds. So by following the diet in this book, I went from 145/95 to 128/81, in just 2 1/2 weeks !!! THANK YOU AGAIN Dr. Matsen, and thanks to Jennifer Beals for her Forward in Eating Alive II !! Her forward about her Lupis going away is what got me interested in doing the diet. This diet changed my life, and I will be doing my best to eat like this the rest of my years. Very Respectfully, ENS Jean Law USNR & Department of Veterans Affairs IT Specialist.

This book has started me on a bit of a health revolution. My stomach has been bloated and I've taken 20minutes to go to the bathroom for as long as I can remember. I suspected this was cause for some concern but I didn't really know until I read this book. The book explains the whole digestive track and its importance to the body.

I've tried a number of different elimination diets to figure out the problems with my stomach. While I still don't know the problem, Jonn Matsen's Food Combining techniques are the ONLY thing that so far eliminates my problem. Despite how old this book is, I think all the information within is accurate and the info is timeless. I read the book in just a few days as it's a quick read.

It's not the best, most comprehensive book out there, but if you're having digestive issues I believe this is the best place to start.

I needed a book like this and it really helped me out. This was my situation: I had never really thought about food choices - I had a decent or maybe even hyper, metabolism, all my life. In this culture, that fact alone causes you to LOOK a lot heathier then you probably are cause people pretty much assume that if you are thin, you must be in good shape and eating properly. But that wasn't the case. I was still trying to get by, eating like an 18 year old. As a result, I have hit the age where my food choices appear to now suddenly matter to my stomach and general health, and no clue about how to take better care of myself - aside from maybe finding a better quality potato chip to call diner, or switching from half & half to 2% milk for my 2 pot of coffee a day habit. Reading this book was a revelation. I am apparently lucky to be alive. Since this is my first stab at "informed" eating, I am not to where I am following the detailed diets in the book so I can't comment on how much better results are if you do follow them, but I at least now have a guide for planning what I'm going to eat. I stock the house with stuff that is less likely to mess me up, and I'm back on speaking terms with my stomach. For me, the book had good and usable information. From the result I got just doing what I understand so far, it was well worth the price. In fact, for me, it's to bad this guy is only in Canada. I would love to get a personalized program. But that aside, I'm glad he has this series of books. I've bought his other two books from this site as well.
