I just want to say a big 'thank you' to Molly Groger who's wonderful book allows me to eat anything i want and still lose weight. i feel fantastic after being on the six-week program! this is the way to go. it's not a diet... it's a way of life! This book shows you how to listen to your body and to eat only when you are hungry, leaving you to sit back, relax and watch the fat melt away! Molly, thank you! You are an inspiration!*

The best book ever on achieving permanent weight loss,
By A Customer
This review is from: Eating Awareness Training: The Natural Way to Permanent Weight Loss (Paperback)
I read this book about 6 years ago and really didn't believe that listening to my body would help me lose weight. I was wrong, it really does. I followed it for six weeks and it changed my life. I lost weight and have never gained it back and I eat whatever I want.

I bought this book back in 1984 when I was a college freshman and had gained those famous ten pounds. I was terrified! I had restricted my calories all through high school, but that wasn't working anymore. This book introduced a new concept to me...One has to tune in to feelings of hunger and fullness to determine when to eat and when to stop. The book does not offer any nutritional advice, but I have to say, I did lose weight. I also kept it off, and whenever I battled with weight gain, this book would certainly help...for a time. I'm now in my 40's and I only have to look at food and I gain weight. I re-purchased this book, thinking it would save me again, but it didn't. I require much fewer calories at this stage of my life, and it isn't enough to just stop eating when I'm feeling full. I'm still taking in too many calories. This book helped, though, over the years, because I formed the habit of never letting myself get ridiculously full of food...hurts too much. What HAS helped me to stay trim is adopting a vegan diet, emphasizing raw foods. The food tends to be nutrient-dense but lower in calories...so I'm healthier, to boot. I would recommend this book to people who have never paid any attention to how they feel physically while they're eating. Some people stuff themselves and are totally unaware of how uncomfortable they truly are. This book teaches you to not only recognize this discomfort, but to helps you to realize that it's a feeling you want to avoid. Result - eating less, losing weight.

Wow, I found this at a thrift store several weeks ago. I got to week two, tucked it on the bedside stand and had boxed up all my other diet books, non-diet books for the library or thrift store...then got sidetracked. Had dragged all the books back to the bookcase, and then found this little gem again. Whew! Panic over (I even bought a new lightweight battery scale after sending the other heavy one to the thrift store in October) and I'm on track again. Other books boxed up again.
I'm buying a second copy so I'm never without, one for home and one to carry with me. I love the hilarious pseudo book titles (i.e. making red blood cells, growing a baby), she throws out to show how ridiculous it is to need a manual (diet or lifestyle program) telling us when, how or what to eat. She doesn't tell us when, how or what, she guides us in weekly focuses to listen to and trust our own body to tell us. Preferably not reading ahead. Hard to do if you've read similar books. This one has them all beat. Even then, just start with week one if you've previewed/read it all through. She offers no food guidelines, no personal opinions. You are the only judge of that based on your own body wisdom. You can read labels, or not. Listening to your body will guide you if a particular brand and it's ingredient contents doesn't make it happy. Your body will remind you next time you consider eating it. Yes, it remembers. Update May 3, 2011 When I said I was back on track, I didn't realize my brain had already flipped the switch that brought me back to natural eating. Eating for nourishment first AND the best tasting bits. Like babies eat. I rarely even consider entertainment/calm-me-down eating anymore...and when I do, it's a simple thing to remember the physical discomfort (fullness vs comfort, gas, bloating, pain). It's just not worth it anymore. Also realizing beforehand the potential waste of an enjoyable experience on less than delicious food. Or the waste of an enjoyable eating experience when I'm not hungry...the taste isn't as intense/what it should be....flat/no taste. And I'm shrinking. Down 12 pounds of 70-75 lbs so far. I bought the scale to make sure I don't lie to myself.

Who doesn't want to believe that they can eat what they want when they want it? I am intrigued by the idea that we, as a whole, have forgotten how to listen to the only true expert on what and when to eat: our own body. It makes a lot of sense and is really pretty simple, but not necessarily easy. It is all about mindfulness. The commitment to learn to listen to and understand your own body is a big one, but worth the effort if it provides the results described in this book. The experiment is underway.

I bought this book several years ago, and treasure it. It helped me shed pounds when I needed to, and has prevented me from becoming really overweight, despite the fact that I love to cook and eat! I love Groger's common sense approach - don't eat when you're not hungry and sensitize yourself to the different levels of hunger. Learn to trust your body. This isn't a "sexy" or trendy diet book, and Groger doesn't give you excuses or mince words. Instead she explains why people develop weight problems and what to do about them. I'm in my 50's and periodically find my clothes getting a little tight. When this happens, I pull out my copy and review what I need to do, and it works!

I lost 75 pounds by using this book. I have also kept off the weight for 15 years by absorbing the mindset that is encouraged by this book. This is not a diet but a new way of thinking about eating.
