Spelt is wheat; whey is dairy - don't trust the ingredients here!,
This review is from: Eating Clean: 100 Appetizing Solutions, Wheat-free & Dairy-free (Spiral-bound)
This book isn't up to its title. Some of the recipes with "whey protein powder" have a "publisher's update" to use "soy-based protein powder" instead, but don't mention why (whey is dairy). Plus, yogurt is an optional ingredient.Spelt is a type of wheat, and recipes use spelt flour. Yikes! We believe that soy that hasn't been fermented is not a healthy food (more info at mercola.com), and this book uses a lot of processed soy. Similar: canola oil. Also, the primary sweetener is xylitol, and we believe stevia to often be a healthier choice (from Dr. J. V. Wright's Nutrition & Healing). _The Joy of Cooking_ has lots of dairy-free, wheat-free recipes, without false promises.

I tried several of the recipes in this book and found them overall to be easy to prepare and tasty. I am intolerant to many ingrediants so, as always, I had to do some minor changes to the recipes - no one with food allergies or intolerances will ever find a perfect cookbook. Here are my reviews of some recipes:Indonesian Chicken Curry - easy to prepare and very good. I used almond butter instead of peanut butter. My hubby ate 3.5 of the 4 chicken breasts! Chicken & Cashew Stirfry - easy to prepare however mine turned out a little dry. I am not sure if I cooked the "sauce" too long of if I did something else wrong, but it is tasty enough for me to try again ;-) In this one I substituted almonds for cashews and olive oil for the peanut oil. Ratatouille - this was good but made a huge amount and we tired of it before it was gone. I mistakenly got tamarind sauce instead of the Tapenade (I thought I buy it at the Whole Foods Market) but it was still good. Spanish Rice with Black Beans - I did not like the spice combination on this one and I think it was the turmeric. I think I will try it again and change up the spices and try to find a way to keep it from being a little dry. Spicy Thai Chicken Soup - I didn't use the homemade coconut milk and that was a mistake. Using Lite Coconut milk made it seem like it was missing some body. Also for this one a little advice on how to use lemon grass would have been helpful. I think I did it right but that could have been another problem with it. I will definately try this one again. Black Bean Soup - Very yummy!! I enjoyed this one alot! Easy to make (I cooked enough beans for the Rice and this dish to save time) and tasty. I added diced tomatoes and added the rice and it was perfect! I hope you guys find this useful and will add this cookbook to your collection.

Wonderful Healthy & Easy Recipes!,

I am a vegetarian so I read this book with some apprehension. But I found a number of recipes that I could prepare and eat just as they were written! And many others are easily transformed into vegetarian meals by substituting tofu for the recommended meat, or just leaving protein out of the recipe. I can't wait for cooler weather so I can try some of the yummy soups! The recipes I have tried are delicious and easily prepared, most with easily found ingredients. I was pleased with Dr. Thry's comments and found them to be very helpful. I highly recommend Eating Clean for anyone interested in eating healthier without giving up delicious food.

I made many recipes from this book, from the pumpkin muffins, the Southwest black bean and corn salad, the California rolls to the Chunky Chicken Black Bean Chili. All were AMAZING, filling, healthy and easy to make. I've lost 2 lbs since I've started making the recipes in this book. The recipes are simple, delicious and creative. The book is small, so it doesn't take up a lot of counter space. I like the ring binding, which makes it easy to flip to the recipe. I'm really happy with this book. It's given me motivation to start cooking again.

Like most cooks, I collect cookbooks that I think will be of use to me, and this is definitely one of the best. I like to cook with few ingredients and make tasty, healthy dishes quickly. As I also am allergic to wheat and like to eat as little dairy as possible, I love Lisa's recipes which omit both. She also specifies organics which I know are better for me. The liver-detox approach I find useful, as well. I don't eat many processed foods, and this book uses very few in the ingredient lists: this is a major plus. I do prefer Stevia to xylitol, however, but that is an easy substitute. I recommend this book to all cooks!

Great resource with lots of healthy options,
This review is from: Eating Clean: 100 Appetizing Solutions, Wheat-free & Dairy-free (Spiral-bound)
This book is great. I am at a point in life where I am facing some health questions due to my diet, and Ms. Allen's "Eating Clean" has helped me answer them. I didn't realize until recently that wheat (or gluten) is a problem for a lot of people. These recipes allow me to address the problems caused by both wheat and dairy, which are so common in so many foods.Tasty alternatives or substitutes are hard to come by. Not only does "Eating Clean" provide those, its straightforward approach gave me -- someone who has always had to work at being comfortable in the kitchen -- the encouragement to make them myself. My headaches and other symptoms have since disappeared, and I am grateful for this book. It is a wonderful resource, and I hope that Ms. Allen writes more of them.

I was hoping for a cookbook that had a lot of recipes I could use. Unfortunately there were very few in here that the average person would eat. I'd give better examples, but I gave it away to a friend. To touch on the dairy free wheat free examples. I don't believe this was written by a person who has celiac or is lactose intolorant. I may be wrong. It appears to be an eating your way clean, which is what the title says. So, it is to detoxify your body. It does have stickers in the cookbook to ask to replace the whey with soy products and spelt can be tolorated by many people who can't have wheat. I CAN eat spelt, not wheat. My husband CAN'T have any gluten. There is a difference. If your problem is JUST wheat...it might not be an issue, if it is gluten, don't eat spelt! Always check with your dr..... I was looking for a gluten free/dairy free cookbook. With this being a CLEAN eating book......the recipes were not overly appetizing.

Was very disappointed. It may have been wheat free but it was not gluten free.
