Just got my copy of Eating Delancey today. This New York Irish girl is positively plotzing. Cannot wait to send a copy to my father-in-law -- a lifelong devotee of Guss' Pickles, Yonah Schimmels and everything else from Delancey to Essex Streets. What a wonderful book. To those of NYC and/or Jewish ancestry -- buy Eating Delancey for yourself, or for anyone on your holiday gift list who is lucky enough to claim the same lineage. Immediately.

This is not really a cookbook. The recipes are few, and their instructions are very general. But this is a CELEBRATION of the Jewish foods that gained fame around Delancey Street on Manhattan's Lower East Side. The book is a JOY to possess and to read. It is filled with memories of foods and growing up in the 20th Century near the LES. I would suggest that anyone who buys this book should add pages of their own memories and those of their family members. For example, I will add how I had a birthday party at Ratner's as well as a family reunion many years ago; how they had great onion rolls (you can now get them at Peck's in Brooklyn); how I once hated a mean counterman at Katz's, drank tea in a glass with a sugar cube at the Grand Dairy, and more.

The book is Jewish food PORN at its best, with full page color portraits of chubs, kugels, seltzer bottles, halvah, brisket, bialys, a meat grinder, a "Tschicken Markt", chicken soup, herring. rollmops, pletzels, mini hot dogs, and more. There is a page for “Delancey on Screen.” In the Introduction by the late Joan Rivers, she shares her love of Jewish food, which was bought on the Lower East Side by family members or on trips to a rich aunt's apartment. She loved Yonah Schimmel's knishes on Houston St. Her daughter and grandson just don't understand her love of noodle kugel and gefilte fish. Fyvush Finkel tells his story of cooking for his family when his wife worked. He shares his memories of pushcarts, the Cafe Royal, and the Second Avenue Deli.

Pass Me a Reuben. That's my comment about this delightful book. The stories and reminiscences were evocative and charming. And the recipes are delicious looking, too. Go for it!

This book was truly made with a love and passion that reflects Aaron Rezny's love of Jewish food that connects us all with family and tradition. With gorgeous photography that makes your mouth water, it's more than just a recipe book, it's history, storytelling, comedy and a collection of celebrity excerpts sharing their love of this great food and it's rich heritage in NYC! I was so amazed with the quality of photography, design and overall compilation I bought 3 more for Chanukah gifts for my family members. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who shares a love of Jewish food, you will not be disappointed!

I gave the book to my cousin in Myrtle Beach. She hasn't stopped raving about it. She is from Brooklyn and is a fabulous cook. The recipes are just like our families made. The pictures are marvelous. She is printing a copy of the Charlotte Russe to hang in her kitchen. She sent a copy to her sister in Mass. and I sent another to my friend on Roosevelt Island. The comments are universally more than positive. The only complaint is about the print. It is hard to make out in some places.
I have never given a gift with such happy results.

Received this Book yesterday from a friend. It is the BEST gift I've received in years. I'm now sending it to friends and family all over the country. Being Jewish is all about the food and memories. This book captures my childhood and family perfectly. The B&W photos make me realize that my family Kodak moments are the SAME as many other Jews of Eastern European roots.
Also, this is a MUST for any New Yorker. We still have Schimmel's on East Houston Street where I can run to bring care packages to my disadvantaged family in Atlanta!
