Grade 5-8-While Goodnough has written a concise and clear account of anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge eating, he offers no new material, other than a brief reference to the obscure eating behavior called pica. The emphasis of the book is on the symptoms, causes, and consequences of eating disorders, with minimal space devoted to treatment and prevention, although the obligatory list of "Where to Find Help" is appended. The author includes a number of (presumably nonfictional) case studies that lend personal interest, but these accounts are inconsistently documented. Several of the sidebars and captioned photos fail to relate directly to the accompanying text. Elizabeth Weiss Vollstadt's Teen Eating Disorders (Lucent, 1999) is a better primary choice.
