A new voice like none other,

I'm not sure how to describe Alexa Wiley's hauntingly beautiful new cd, eating that way. Or how to describe Alexa, for that matter. Is she folk? Anti-Folk? Jazz? Women's Music? World Beat? Or, as one friend who heard her at the Memphis Folk Alliance conference recently described her, "contemporary beatnik?" Whatever -- her songs are gorgeous, dreamlike, impressionist poetry (heck, she has one spoken word poetry track here) that grab you, soar, and take you places you never before imagined. There's angst here, but it's all transformed into beauty. Don't expect traditional song structure or variations of songs you've heard a thousand times before. Expect something new and powerful and wonderful. The same for her guitar work. And the production here by the amazing Jim Brunberg, strictly in the background where it belongs,demonstrates why his Mississippi Studios is the hottest thing going in one of the country's greatest music towns. You could say she was discovered by the legendary Michael Hurley, but she's about to be discovered by the world. Check out this record -- you, too, will fall in love with this wonderful new voice.
