Book Description

January 2005
A well-written, wickedly funny and heartbreakingly honest, Eating My Way to Heaven is an unforgettable story about one woman’s battle with food and drug abuse, and her ultimate triumph over her addictions. In this page-turner autobiography, Martin takes the reader inside the devastating effects of sexual abuse and incest and the complicated, painful road to recovery. While Martin’s story addresses serious issues of dysfunctional families, physical and psychological addictions, it also provides vital information on the value of good nutrition, health and well-being. It is sure to encourage all those battling with various addictions to learn how to live with purpose and discover a life of balance and peace. Eating My Way to Heaven is not a typical "diet" book, but reads like a fast-moving screenplay for a Hollywood blockbuster, with such personalities as Mickey Rooney, Farrah Fawcett and Oprah each adding their personal twist to the tale.

3.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, but not for the reason you'd think, December 9, 2005

Eating My Way to Heaven is ostensibly the autobiography of a woman, Denise Martin, whose mission is to spread the word about healthy eating and especially the total avoidance of sugar. I completely agree with her mission and think word of it should spread. That said, this book is a peek inside the mind of a very unusual person.

I stayed up all night reading her book---I couldn't put it down. It chronicles Denise Martin's childhood all the way up to her current life as a healthy foods advocate. More than that, though, it gives you insight into the mind of someone apparently with a serious personality disorder. This point of view was stunning, literally stunning...I read with amazement how the author has spent most of her life mooching money from others, justifying her bizarre behavior, and continuing---despite it all---on her mission to make something of her life, especially in the area of healthy eating. I have known such people before (people with personality disorders), but never had a chance to understand how they think and why their behavior makes sense to them. This book shows how Denise Martin made sense of her life and world, and she tells her story in her own way; I'm not certain from my reading that she even understands how incredible her story is---not simply the events of what happened to her, but how she makes sense of them, which is far more interesting than any of the events of her chaotic, dramatic life story.

Her story is one of persistence and dedication to her cause, but also one of delusion, denial, grandiosity, and more.

My husband read parts of this book and thought it was a fictional work of someone who is pretending to have a psychological disorder, to show this point of view for artistic effect. I am not certain, but I would tend to disagree, as the publishers say that it is autobiographical. I think it is more likely that Denise Martin is courageously giving us a window into the mind of someone struggling with many psychological problems as she attempts to make a difference in the world.

Go to goodreads.com and read the review by Lisa. She reviewed this book perfectly and said the same things I would have. I really wanted to like this book, and did finish it to see if she ever got it together. She didn't. What a waste of my time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Legacies -how will you be remembered?, August 8, 2009
This review is from: Eating My Way to Heaven (Paperback)
It is my priviledge to have met and to have become friends with Denise Martin. I have read her book and........the book is only the beginning. She has had such a stunning recovery in her life that she wants the world to know so they may experience greater health and abundance in their lives. I believe the world will see the effects of Denise's passion for helping others when other projects in the works explode on the face of this planet. Usually we have lived with some ordeal or a life time of ordeals that drive us to greater works. It is my opinion that if you dream of obtaining a goal in your life time then your dream is way too small. Dream big dreams, seek philantropic goals, and fight with every ounce of energy your body can produce and you just might come close to running along side this world class champion of a person.

This book is a must read as it is a glimpse into the future of what is to come. Read it and then I will come back and share another review and not say I told you so............................
