I LOVE this cookbook! The hubs is a big meat and potatoes guy, and I'm more of a soup and salad girl, so this is absolutely the best of both worlds. Turkey Albondigas soup? YUM! We all love it, and it's HEALTHY; just as good as my old albondigas soup recipe. Lamb stew, meatloaf, burgers, shepherd's pie; it's all here, as well as a gooey cheese pastas, oven fried chicken, stuffed peppers, a fantastic dessert section and of course my favorite soup and salad chapters. There are even recipes for Thanksgiving and Superbowl, which are challenging for anyone who tries to eat well. This book, though it's only 250 pages, is packed with sample menus, cooking tips, tips for lightening menus and of course all of the nutritional content is listed. I think I own every Eatingwell cookbook, and this is my favorite, by far. Thank you EatingWell!!!

I am just getting started with the book and cooking in general. I want to eat better but miss some of my favorites like macaroni and cheese. The recipe in here makes me forget about my mom's mac & cheese and just want this version.
The recipes are easy to follow though I wish there was a picture for each recipe. I am a visual sort of person.

Packed with classic dishes redone to cut calories and preserve taste,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews

The classic makeover book for comfort food is Comfort Foods Made Healthy, providing not only recipe makeovers of old favorites - nearly two hundred, made healthier - but basic details on how such makeovers happened, and how they can be applied to other dishes. In fact, every recipe comes with a 'makeover tip' in a boxed sidebar, color photos, and make-ahead and 'active time' calculations for busy home cooks. From a healthier Old-Fashioned Chicken and Dumplings to Spinach and Cheese-Stuffed Shells, it's packed with classic dishes redone to cut calories and preserve taste, and will be a favorite in any general lending library.

I bought five Eating Well cookbooks and this is our favorite. This book takes "normal" food and tells you ways to make it healthier. We find most of the recipes taste good. We have some of the other Eating well cookbooks, which are also great but tend to use a few ingredients that are hard to find in a small northern town where we obviously can't have farmer's markets year round. I think occasionally the eating well recipes make things a little unnecessarily difficult in their directions but you can read ahead and decide if you really need to dirty that many pots and pans. I love that they give you an estimate of how long the prep work and total cook time takes. There are not pictures of every recipe (which is a shame) but there are several color pictures throughout the book. I think these books are good for weight loss but also just for people who want to eat healthy foods without sacrificing taste. The eating well philosophy seems to be to eat a lot of fresh veggies, brown rice/flour, to use cooking oil whenever possible to avoid deep frying or butter, etc. They seem to encourage low fat dairy products like sour cream, but let you eat "real" cheese in small amounts. The books seem very balanced with sections of salads, soups, casseroles, beef, chicken, fish, and vegetarian dishes. It's been a fun adventure to try these recipes.

This is such a fantastic cookbook!! I bought it a couple of weeks ago, and my husband and I have made 6 different recipes. ALL of them have been incredibly delicious! This book is totally worth every penny; not only for the delicious recipes, but also for the hints and tips at making any recipe a bit healthier.

As you might expect, coming from Eating Well, this is a very attractive book. The illustrations are lovely and informative.
I've tried 5 recipes and so far, this book is 5 for 5! (Pineapple Coffee Cake, Cream of Mushroom and Barley Soup, one of the lasagnas, and the Irish Lamb Stew.) What I really appreciate, however, is the handy information on food labels and the profiles on "making over" certain types of meals. Sure, I knew a lot of the stuff anyway, but having it in this one book is really helpful.

Great Recipes, but...,

This review is from: EatingWell Comfort Foods Made Healthy: The Classic Makeover Cookbook (EatingWell) (Paperback)
The recipes in the book are well written; nutritional information is comprehensive and there is a good deal of variety in the types of recipes and dishes contained within the book.
Why only two stars? Less than a year after I bought this book, it is disintegrating; pages have come completely loose. I will have to spend a lot of time to repair this book so that it is usable and pages will not be lost. I would not order this book again unless it was available in hardcover, which is too bad as I really do like the contents of the book, just not the physical qualities of the book.
