5.0 out of 5 stars The What and Why of Good Grammar
I'm surprised by the lack of positive reviews for this book. I found it informative, succinct, and witty. One simply cannot learn grammar effectively through rote memorization. Were that true, there would be no need for this book as we, or at least those of my generation, were supposed to have learned this previously in school.

The book was funny. The calendar isn't. It's boring and whiny.

Please don't judge the book by this calendar! The book was great. My husband and daughter loved it. I gave them the calendar for Christmas, thinking that it would be just as funny. What a disappointment!

I strongly suspect that the person who created the calender was not Lynne Truss, but someone from Andrews McMeel who did not understand the subtle humor of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The What and Why of Good Grammar, August 1, 2006

I'm surprised by the lack of positive reviews for this book. I found it informative, succinct, and witty. One simply cannot learn grammar effectively through rote memorization. What Truss provides are the mental hooks, presented in an engaging manner, to enable the ongoing retention and use of proper English grammar. By detailing the genesis and origin of acceptable grammar rules, Truss gives the reader the framework to effectively understand, and therefore apply, those rules on an ongoing basis.

My single want, after reading this book, is the lack of coverage for some areas of English grammar, those concerning the ampersand come immediately to mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ironic how a point can be made, February 24, 2006

This review is from: Eats, Shoots & Leaves: 2006 Day-to-Day Calendar (Calendar)
Clearly Lynne's point is made about how little attention is paid to punctuation and grammar. All who have given poor reviews because you thought you were buying a book and not a calendar need more than her book to help you...try glasses or a reading class first. Amazon has clearly labeled her book with (Hardcover) and the calendar is indicated by, after the title, "...Leaves: <--(this is a colon) Day-to-Day Calendar."

Lynne's rating shouldn't suffer because all of you refused to pay attention to detail beforehand. It shows your "rudeness" and how you are in your own bubble so much that you don't even pay attention to words, just pretty pictures. Good thing she wrote the book on rudeness now too!

Great job Lynne!

1.0 out of 5 stars Lame, January 12, 2006
This review is from: Eats, Shoots & Leaves: 2006 Day-to-Day Calendar (Calendar)
I completely agree with the previous review.
Some specific examples:
*Jan 9, 2006 - "It's tough being a stickler for punctuation these days. One almost dare not get up in the mornings."
*Jan 13, 2006 - "When sticklers point out illiterate mistakes, we are often aggressively instructed to 'get a life' by people who, interestingly, display no evidence of having lives themselves."
*Jan 14, 2006 - "Sticklers never read a book without pencil in hand, to correct typographical errors."

In three words: uninformative, arrogant, useless.

1.0 out of 5 stars This will NOT teach you anything, January 7, 2006
This review is from: Eats, Shoots & Leaves: 2006 Day-to-Day Calendar (Calendar)
I bought this because I thought it would teach me propper punctuation. What a joke!
All this is nothing more than a collection of the author's rants and ravings about poor punctuation.
She loads the book and the calendar with examples of right and wrong punctuation or sometimes just the wrong punctuation but fails to tell the reader what makes it wrong or how to fix it. It is totally worthless (except maybe as kindling).
Also, the author goes on, and on, and on ranting about poor grammar. I got the point at about page ten. The rest of the book was a little (note the extreme sarcasm) redundant!

This calendar was really bad. I was hoping for tips or at least some humor. I took it off my desk before the end of January.
