Biography

The Everly Brothers topped the charts in Britain and America in the late 50s and early 60s with a series of close-harmony hits including “Cathy’s Clown”, “Bye Bye Love” and “All I Have to Do Is Dream”. In all, they enjoyed 26 Billboard Top 40 singles and that achievement was recognised when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. Rolling Stone magazine lists them as No.33… Read more in Amazon's Everly Brothers Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the CD reissue, April 28, 2007
This review is from: Eb 84 (Audio CD)
This Mercury album was a wonderful reunion, resurgence, and return to form for the Everlys, who had an acrimonious breakup in the Seventies. Their harmonies were as great as ever, and if anything, the mellowness that came with age enriched their songs, tinged as many of them are with a wistful sadness. The choice of originals and covers was perfect; my favorites are "Why Worry" and "Lay Lady Lay."

The Everly Brothers spent most of the 70's performing solo, which only proved - as is so often the case in close-knit artistic partnerships - how much each brother needed the other to sound his best. In 1983, enough water had flowed under the bridge for the two to resume performing and recording together. The tours, with a backup band led by guitarist Albert Lee, proved they could still sing well. The records were good efforts and Paul McCartney even penned a small hit single for them ("On the Wings of a Nightingale").

In 1984 The Everlys made a commercial and artistic comeback with 'EB 84.' With Dave Edmunds producing, Phil and Don brought their sound into the '80s while maintaining their trademark harmonies. In addition to the McCartney song, other highlights include Jeff Lynne's ethereal "The Story of Me" and three Don Everly originals. 'EB 84' proved the brothers had more to offer than simply nostalgia. - Richie Unterberger/J.P. Ollio, AMG
