5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the CD reissue
This Mercury album was a wonderful reunion, resurgence, and return to form for the Everlys, who had an acrimonious breakup in the Seventies. Their harmonies were as great as ever, and if anything, the mellowness that came with age enriched their songs, tinged as many of them are with a wistful sadness. 3.0 out of 5 stars Ok Reunion Effort -- Sounds a Bit Dated Now
I like this record, a comeback effort produced by Dave Edmunds. Edmunds punches up the sound, the guitars bear his trademark sound, and there is a fine song penned by Paul McCartney as well as one by Jeff Lynne. What I find difficult when listening to it now, however, is the cheesy 80's synthesizers which back up most of the tracks. They distract from the fine...

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 Stars: The First & Best of Their Three Mercury Albums, June 7, 2005

The Everly Brothers spent most of the 70's performing solo, which only proved - as is so often the case in close-knit artistic partnerships - how much each brother needed the other to sound his best. In 1983, enough water had flowed under the bridge for the two to resume performing and recording together. The tours, with a backup band led by guitarist Albert Lee, proved they could still sing well. The records were good efforts and Paul McCartney even penned a small hit single for them ("On the Wings of a Nightingale").

In 1984 The Everlys made a commercial and artistic comeback with 'EB 84.' With Dave Edmunds producing, Phil and Don brought their sound into the '80s while maintaining their trademark harmonies. In addition to the McCartney song, other highlights include Jeff Lynne's ethereal "The Story of Me" and three Don Everly originals. 'EB 84' proved the brothers had more to offer than simply nostalgia. - Richie Unterberger/J.P. Ollio, AMG

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't look back, February 1, 2004

This review is from: EB 84 (Audio CD)
This was the Everly Brothers "comeback" album. It is a good album. I especially like the Everly's version of "Lay, Lady, Lay". Here is the track listing:

1. On the Wings of a Nightingale
2. Danger Danger
3. Story of Me
4. I'm Taking My Time
5. First in Line
6. Lay Lady Lay
7. Following the Sun
8. You Make It Seem So Easy
9. More Than I Can Handle
10. Asleep

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Everly Album, July 21, 2010
By
This review is from: Eb 84 (Audio CD)
This is a five star album in my humble opinion. There are no stinkers on this album and the musical performances are very well done. McCartney's "Wings of a Nightingale" and Jeff Lynne's "Story of Me" are great. This is not a reunion album that was just done for nostalgias sake, but is a well made album that really shows the Everly's growth as artists since their break up in the early 70's. The time apart gave them time to mature as brothers and artists and it really shows.
This is the most satisfying Everly's album that I own (I have 8 Brothers albums and most are "spotty" with one good song followed by a "filler". I see that "EB 84" is quite expensive now here on Amazon since it is out of print. If you can't afford EB 84 get the follow up albums "Born Yesterday" and "Two Hearts". While they are not quite as solid as EB 84 they are still very good and can be picked up here on Amazon for about $25.00. Get them before the prices get as crazy as EB84 is now.

4.0 out of 5 stars A WELCOME REUNION, May 24, 2007
This review is from: Eb 84 (Audio CD)
If there was a chance the Everly's were going to get back together after almost a decade and make a record, this certainly was the one they should've made and did. It's a solid effort with great songs, fine musicianship (without being over bearing) and of course, stellar vocals from Don and Phil. It's been said Dylan wrote LAY, LADY, LAY with the thought that the Everly Brothers should record it. Because of Phil and Don's acrimonious relationship, it took almost 15 years for that to happen. But here it is along with a McCartney contribution; ON THE WINGS OF A NIGHTINGALE and other assorted gems. My one knock and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is Dave Edmunds' production is a little heavy handed at times(it was the 80's afterall). With such pristine harmonies as those of the brothers Everly, who needs it?

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgot how great this was!, March 1, 2011
This review is from: Eb 84 (Audio CD)
I have this on vinyl and rarely spin records anymore. Hearing the CD version of this made me remember how great this album was! Not a bum track on it and some songs I forgot I REALLY like. Always loved ON THE WINGS OF A NIGHTINGALE and am a huge Jeff Lynne and Dave Edmunds fan (and Beatles fan). Kind of wish there was more after listening to it. It does NOT sound dated to me and pulled me back in. YOU MAKE IT SEEM SO EASY was a surprise I had forgotten about...THEY make it seem so easy vocally. This should be IN PRINT and bonus tracks would be awesome. A delight, indeed.

What I find difficult when listening to it now, however, is the cheesy 80's synthesizers which back up most of the tracks. They distract from the fine songwriting and make you think The Thompson Twins are about to join them at any minute. If you can get past that it's worth picking up.

for those who missed so much the everlys voices combination this has been a real delight.after 10 years apart, they were back together in a studio in 84 and we had a least a new album.Voices are still there but the sound changed a little mainly due to the band sound (English band), this is not a rock album, it's a medium tempo list of quite nice songs, the main one writen by Paul mc cartney. it does not reach the level of "Cathy's clown" or "sleepless nights" but the voices are so unique ...it's a good one for Everly collectors.Thierry
