3.0 out of 5 stars Too Much Sap, Syrup and Sugar, October 4, 2011
This review is from: Echo Bridge (Audio CD)
After meeting Colin backstage at a Zombies show the recently, we began speaking of his wealth of solo material. He is quite the gentleman and most amiable. I had asked about which of his solo CD's he was most pleased with and he had indicated Echo Bridge. I had obtained pretty much every Zombies song & CD (at least that I could find including New World) and most of the Colin Blunstone solo LP's. This CD in my honest opinion doesn't hold nearly the creativity or beauty of "One Year", "Ennismore", "Journey", or the more recent and brilliant "Ghost of You and Me". Colin's voice is stellar on Echo Bridge in its entirety let's make no mistake there. The instrumentation and production is sad to say, most commercial and in a sappy way. With few exceptions, missing are the lush strings and genuine sound of real musical instruments. Only an occasional saxophone and acoustic guitar appears here and there outside of Colin's voice. Synth strings and keyboards are abound throughout as well as percussion. It appears almost everything on this cd is electronic and it is devoid of true natural sounds. Lyrically speaking, it's all about love and trite cliches. if you are seeking the gems then quite possibly the highlights are "Best Is Yet To Come" or "If I Said" although the alto sax detracts from the track's beauty as the song does employ a real string sound (finally).

I found it a struggle to get through the CD and wish it weren't so. If you're familiar with "Though You Are Far Away", "Caroline Goodbye", "Andorra" and "Follow" then you may agree 'Echo Bridge' falls short of these other landmarks. If you're not a devout fan then this CD may suit you well and it's in the neighborhood of Sting's commercial sound. It's pretty, just too much sugar, syrup & sap for those of us weened on his other material. I give it a sparing 3 star rating and not a desert island CD.
