This review is from: Echo Bridge (Audio CD)
If it weren't for One Year, Ennismore, and Journey, one could easily call Echo Bridge a masterpiece. Well, it's not, but it comes impressively close. There isn't much on here that's not to love and, being one of Colin's newest and biggest fans, I'm certainly not about to tell you it sucks. He is not only always worth listening to, but he also has such incredible taste at picking out songs that are both rich in melodic structure and frought with meaning. His own songs are consistent with his covers, but there aren't too many on this particular outing. This only emphasizes the fact that he knows what's best for his style and his incredible one-of-a-kind voice.

1. "Levi Stubbs' Tears": Well, I guess this Billy Bragg song is an oddball rocker choice as opposed to his usual faire. It's about a woman who suffers domestic violence at the hands of a military husband, but it's also an interesting piece that works surprisingly well in this eclectic mix of--mostly romantic pop--songs.

2. "Tearing the Good Things Down:" A sad social commentary on the way people throw away the things that really matter for the almighty dollar.

3. "The Radio Was Playing Johnny Come Lately:" Another strange rocker ala "Levi Stubbs" about an ill-fated love affair.

4. "Everlasting Love:" Absolutely gorgeous ballad about coming home after a maelstrom of romantic mistakes. I am always hoping this will happen to me, and hearing it always gives me hope.

5. "What is Love?:" Good question. The begging, pleading, and commitment in this song are heartbreaking, but I have recently heard this from someone I'm no longer sure of. The woman in the song wants to go, and I can only think, as I myself do, she has her reasons. Sometimes words and half-kept promises are not enough. The man may very well be sincere, but there are reasons the woman is walking away that he will never be able to understand. You still can't help hoping it works out. The song is so beautiful.

6. "Oxygen:" What a sensual, sexy, and invitingly romantic song. Wow...

7. "If I Said:" Oh, how any woman who's confused would long to hear these words from another man right now: "How could he stand to see you sad? How could he treat a love so bad?"

8. "The Best is Yet to Come:" Something I've heard repeatedly, but a song I've known since 1982 as recorded by soap actress Patty Weaver. This is a great, beautifully sensitive song, and I think Colin's version tops Justin Hayward's, especially with that grand, sweeping piano behind his distinctive voice.

9. "Breakaway:" My favorite song on this album. Great pop sensibilities abounding with rich harmonies, infectious and addictive, you want to hear it over and over again.

10: "Prayer:" Adequately nice closer. Not my favorite, but I appreciate the gospel choral feel of it.

This really is one of Colin's best albums, very personal to me, and I think that if you listen, you will find something in it for you as well. It's hard to ignore an artiste that knows how to touch people and reach the heart on every level. Colin Blunstone always seems to be capable of doing that very thing.
