Review of "Echo" by Leona Lewis,
By Antoine D. Reid "80sforever" (Durham, NC United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Echo (Audio CD)
'Echo' is the follow-up album to the highly successful debut, 'Spirit'. In many ways, this album titled definitely lives up to its name; this album seems more by-the-book and sticks to a strict pop music formula, making it something of a weak imitation of her first album. Don't get me wrong, 'Echo' has some tracks that show off Lewis' impressive vocal abilities. At the same time, it lacks the personality and "spirit" that made her first album resonate with so many listeners. Lewis had a hand in writing and developing more tracks on this release than her last but after a few listens, I don't at all have a sense of who she is beyond having the ability to hit a few high notes that'd make Mariah Carey watch her back.
The Good: 'Echo' sticks to what could be called Lewis' area of expertise; songs about heartache and love backed with melodramatic, sweeping, epic productions. Certain tracks sound as if they came directly from the previous album. "Brave" has the expansive, epic vibe that made Leona Lewis stand out from her competitors. With this song, it's not the production but her voice that is on display. "Broken" is another song that, production and quality wise, sounds as if it's taken from 'Spirit' and features Leona Lewis' great vocal talents and ability to deliver an emotional performance and not just sing pointless words and lyrics as many artists do. As with any successful follow-up, Lewis does venture into new territory. 'Echo' has Lewis' music experimenting more with uptempo tracks and venturing away (just a bit) from the standard emotional heartbreak that made 'Spirit' a bit dull after a few listens. "Can't Breathe", my favorite track from the album, blends an impressive vocal performance that has her hitting all sorts of notes while having a fun, fresh instrument backing that is unlike anything being played on the radio now. "My Hands" is perhaps the best produced track on the album as it sounds like a follow-up to 'Spirit' track "Better In Time". The beat paired with the Justin Timberlake track "Don't Let Me Down" was unexpected and served as a great contrast to Leona Lewis' singing style. If there's one strength in 'Echo' it's that no track sounds like the other; Lewis and her producers did a great job of experimenting with many different styles and played with her vocals so that not every track has her trying to hit high notes as expected. The Bad: Half of this album just bore me as a listener. With the exception of "Can't Breathe", the first half of the album had me truly wondering if things were going to get any better. The problem with tracks like "Happy", "Love Letter" and even the Timbaland track "Outta My Head" is that they sound like average pop songs and do nothing for her as an artist. The album has a strength in that it isn't afraid of experimenting with different sounds. On the first half of the album though, this experimentation is more of a weakness because the focus appears to be put more so on the beats and instrument while leaving her voice at the side, unattended to. Some of these songs feature some complex, busy, beats and instead of singing, it feels as if she's more focused on out-singing or overcoming the distracting beats than delivering a vocal performance. Tracks that suffer from this the most are "Outta My Head" and "Brave". There were certain tracks produced specifically for the U.S. market and among them, "Fly Here Now" sticks out like a sore thumb because it sounds under-produced and doesn't vibe well with the majority of the album with its 1980s pop music flair. The overall weakness of 'Echo' is that unlike the first album, this one lacks focus and sounds more like a hodge-podge collection of songs that were produced by different people and slapped together on a disc. In all, 'Echo' is average. The later half of the album is definitely better than the first half. The album feels out of focus and all over the place creating something of a mess. Instead of showcasing what makes her stand out as an artist in this market, being her great voice, this album's focus on the beats and instrumentation leads to an album that features some shoddy and unimpressive, rather average, vocal performances. Listen To These: "Can't Breathe", "My Hands", "Alive", "Lost Then Found"/"Stone Hearts" (Hidden Track).

I picked the album up for the song "My Hands" because it's the theme for "Final Fantasy XIII" and I'm a big fan of the game. I loaded it on my mp3 player and I loved what I heard. This is a wonderful album and I would pick this up if your a fan of Leona Lewis. It has some good beats and is full heart filled music.

An "echo" of her debut,
By
This review is from: Echo (Audio CD)
Apparently Kelly Clarkson was rather upset with singer/songwriter Ryan Tedder as she says the song he wrote for her "Already gone" was a rip off of Beyoncé's "Halo", which he penned. It would be interesting to know how Leona Lewis feels as she's got two on her new CD "Echo". Lead-off single "Happy", and "Lost then found" (featuring Tedder's group OneRepublic) sound so much like the afore mentioned song.
The funny thing is, despite supposedly being composed and produced by an armada of songwriters and producers, much of the album is more of the same. Not bad, but nothing special either. I guess they decided to play it safe and not tinkle too much with a winning formula, seeing as her debut sold some 6 million copies worldwide. Fortunately, some songs rise above the anonimity of the rest; "Broken" is a beautiful power ballad, "Stop crying your heart out" is a delicately sung ballad and a cover of an Oasis song (much like "Run" on her debut was a cover of a Snow Patrol hit), "Don't let me down" (a nice throbbing song with shuffling beats and a slight Timbaland feel, produced by Justin Timberlake's production trio the Y's), the power ballad "Alive", and the hidden beautiful piano ballad "Stone hearts & hand grenades" with simply beautiful dreamy harmonies and choppy strings in parts. She does attempt some sonic variety on the upbeat synth-driven Donna Summer/La Roux-style "Outta my head", and two perfunctory Rock songs, "Love letter" and "Broken". A good record which offers nothing beyond the anticipated. I still await the day Leona comes out from underneath mentor Simon Cowell's shadow and releases a CD more befitting of her stunning voice. As it is, this is merely an "Echo" of her debut.

Leona Lewis's first album Spirit was hit and miss, there were some fantastic songs, but many thought most of the songs on her album were mediocre. So, will her second album be better? In my opinion, yes, it is. Though I will admit many of her songs do sound similar on this album, I found quite a few to my liking. But before you say, "but, there are quite a few reviews that say Echo is dull, or average at best", remember, it all boils down to one thing, your opinion. Listen to a few songs from her album and then decide if you like it or not. My personal favorites are "Happy", "Brave" and my absolute favorite song she's ever written "My Hands." I think it's my favorite because it's the first song I had ever heard from her. I first heard it on a commercial for Final Fantasy Xlll (which I'm not a fan of) and it just was stuck in my head for days. So I finally decided to look up the commercial online to see who wrote the song and I've been a Leona Lewis fan ever since. I also love "My Hands" because I had never really appreciated music before that song and now I listen to music much more than I used to. So how many songs are on her album? There are thirteen in all, like her first album, and they are;
Happy (4:01) I Got You (3:46) Love Letter (4:00) Can't Breath (4:14) You Don't Care (4:03) Outta My Head (3:39) Brave (3:36) My Hands (4:12) Alive (3:29) Don't Let Me Down (4:35) Fly Here Now (3:40) Broken (4:03) Lost Then Found (3:53) I also found the packaging to my liking, I thought the photos chosen for her album were excellent and the acquired lyrics were a very nice bonus. I just love everything about this album and I'm looking forward to her next one as well. Echo will always be a very special CD to me, and I don't know if anything will top it, so am I a Leona Lewis fan? You bet I am.

If you liked her debut album, there is no doubt that you will love this album also, if not More.
I absolutley loved it, even though just like her last, it took me a few listens to love it more and more. In a world where Mariah Carey cares more about looking sexy and sounding like she wants it instead of making good music, it's good to listen to someone who puts their vocal talent for good use with these wonderful collection of songs. Good Job Leona! My Top 5. 1. My Hands 2. I Got U 3. Don't Let Me Down 4. Broken 5. Happy A Must Have!

This CD really has grown on me and I find that I am really in love with at least six tracks to the point that I play the constantly there are the singles Happy and Brave that are sure hits but then there are a slew of songs that you like like Can't Breathe, My Hands, Alive, and Broken. Its just a great CD all around the other songs like the duet with OneRepublic are definitely worth a second listen. I know that people like to get a totally new sound and evolution on the sophomore effort but I like that it keeps in tune with Spirit and will look forward to the evolution of her sound in her Third album which I am sure will be just as great.

Strong Follow-Up To 'Spirit' - 3.5 stars,
This review is from: Echo (Audio CD)
On ECHO, Leona Lewis sounds even better and more inspired than she did on her triumphant breakthrough album, Spirit. That isn't to say that 'Echo' is perfect, because it isn't (there is some clear filler) - however, Lewis sounds more inspired and even the slightest bit more fun here. There is no "Bleeding Love", but there are several first-rate tracks here, even if they don't quite possess the same 'hit-potential' of Leona's #1 single.
The album opens open with the big, but inspired "Happy", probably poised as this album's "Bleeding Love". While I love "Happy", I also see why it has been 'somewhat flat' as far as radio airplay. Nonetheless, Leona's vocal performance is exceptional by all means and the songwriting and production work are spot on. "I Got You", the follow-up track is solid as well, if a shade less captivating, finding Lewis singing a more uptempo, jubilant number. "Love Letter" isn't bad either, but it is average in comparison to "Happy" or "I Got You". "Can't Breathe" proves to be one of Leona Lewis's best songs in my eyes, with her facilitating those high notes with such ease. The songwriting is perfect, the production work haunting, and best of all, Lewis is unbelievable. Young 'Whitney Houston', period. Similarly, the Ryan Tedder produced "You Don't Care" is fine too and catchy. The clubbier "Outta My Head" is catchy enough, but doesn't connect with the listener quite as much as the big ballads or the mid-tempo adult-contemporary cuts. "Brave", which proceeds, makes up for any laxness. "My Hands" brings another big, dramatic number to the table with choir and a bombastic refrain that suits Lewis perfectly. "Alive", "Don't Let Me Down", and "Fly Here Now" are lukewarm in comparison to the best material, making the album sag just slightly. "Broken" redeems 'Echo', if not quite to the bar set by "Happy" or "Can't Breathe". The album closes somewhat unexceptionally, with the One Republic feature "Lost Then Found", which wouldn't have hurt anyone should it have been cut. Overall, Echo doesn't disappoint even when it doesn't thrill, which makes it a solid listen. Most notably, it shows a burgeoning artist trying to build upon the success of her mega first album (as far as sales), even if it is flawed. Not perfect, but a fine listen by all means. 3.5 stars.

An Amazing Voice Couldn't Save This Album
I am not sure if this album was rushed in anyway, but I found this album to be quite boring. I love ballads as much as the next person, but Leona doesn't really deliver on her second album. There seems to be something missing. I am not sure if it's explainable. When her original album came out there was rave reviews about how Leona is the new Mariah and Whitney and Yes, she can SING! Her amazing vocals were showcased front and center on the amazing track that was "Bleeding Love". Written of course by the awesomely talented Ryan Tedder (Lead singer of OneRepublic). If you are looking for Bleeding Love part 2, this is not the album for you. If you are looking for the HIGH NOTES then this album is not for you. She doesnt do any HIGH NOTES on ECHO. Yes, her lead single HAPPY is once again written by Ryan, but Leona herself takes writing credits on the majority of her second album. After listening to the entire album i am not sure if this was a good idea. HAPPY is a great lead off single, but besides the amazing chorus verse the rest of the song is just boring-ville. Even top notch music producer Max Martin (Baby One More Time, Oops! I did It Again, Lucky, Its Gonna Be Me, My life Would Suck Without You, etc) couldn't even save this album, which surprised me. He wrote Leona two songs on the album and they ended being dull tracks as well. She also works with Harvey Mason who is known for delivering R&B songs & the spirit of R&B is nowhere near being captured here. I found myself falling asleep after track six and only to be interested in Leona's last song when she does her duet with OneRepublic. I didn't find ECHO to have any standout tracks. As mentioned, I like HAPPY (only the chorus) and I like her duet with OneRepublic. Other then that there isn't much on the album that I am head over heels in love with. The album just came off boring. Perhaps Leona is working with the wrong producers. I know I will get trashed by Leona fans for my review, but in all honesty, the album was just mediocre at best!

Second album syndrome,
By bobby morrow "Bobby Morrow" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Echo (Audio CD)
Thanks to the dud lead single, 'Happy', the 2nd Leona Lewis album is set to under-achieve. Does it deserve to? Well, it's not far removed from her debut, 2007's 'Spirit' meaning that it's mainly a collection of dull ballads with an 'interesting' cover thrown in. Trouble is, 'Spirit' had 'Bleeding Love', a rare great song that Lewis stumbled upon. It's still really her only true worldwide hit. BL gave people the illusion that the dreary, ballad heavy 'Spirit' might contain similar tracks of such quality but they were to be disappointed. Thing is, will they be fooled twice? I think not.
Let's be upfront. 'Echo' has no 'Bleeding Love'. 'Happy' really is as good as it gets. Writer Ryan Tedder (rapidly becoming the new Diane Warren) provides a by-the-numbers 'dramatic' ballad for Lewis to oversing and then repeats the process several times. Lewis is a massively over-rated vocalist. Far too busy cramming as many notes as she can into the songs, her phrasing is sloppy and she has little respect for the melodies in general. I also think her voice has a miserable, depressing edge to it. Meaning that even on the (few) upbeat tracks, she still manages to bring you down. Her cover of 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out' should be a showstopper, but you're sick of it a minute in. She sounds uncomfortable singing it as given the structure of the song, she can't just sing any old rubbish and has to adhere (for the most part) to the (original) tune. Even the sleeve artwork is poor. It looks like it took 10 minutes to prepare and is remarkably cheap looking considering Lewis's starpower (up to the release of this at least). After 2 weeks here in the UK, the album is already sinking down the charts. As far as I can hear, there are no possible singles here to revive it. At least this gives Lewis a chance to record a few (hopefully) better songs and then release the whole thing again in a few months as a 'special edition'! |
