Book Description

January 2003
"Mark Siegel's ECHO AND NARCISSUS is a tragicomic downbound train powered by hi-octane rock 'n' roll voodoo. From the John Fogarty swampedelic riffs of Part One, to the Jim Morrison Lizard King squalor of Part Two, to the Elvis-in-a-gold-jumpsuit decadence of Part Three, this novel chronicling the lives and hard times of Max, the wasted guitarist with a mind too nimble for his own good, and Echo, his naive yet wise child bride with pipes of gold, covers more quintessential American pop culture terrain than anything by Salmon Rushdie or Don DeLillo. Siegel is the Bad, Bad Leroy Brown of slipstream writing: meaner than a junkyard dog, but you can't help petting his razorback fur." --Paul Di Filippo, author of STRANGE TRADES

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Echo and Narcissus, Mark Siegel's debut dark fantasy, a singer and her songwriter companion plunge into the seamier side of the New Orleans music world, but the real test comes later in L.A., where they must contend with the supernatural. Blurbs from Tim Powers, Paul di Filippo and Edward Bryant should secure more than usual attention for this first novel.

Review

"Powerful and vivid. Siegel's characters really cast shadows; you find yourself believing everything that happens to them." -- Tim Powers, author of DECLARE

"So compelling it's impossible to look away....a fascinating read, full of flash and thunder." -- The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, May, 2003

"This sort of nightmare dark fantasy takes classical training and raw talent. Mark Siegel has pulled it off. In spades." -- Edward Bryant, Nebula Award winner

Hardboiled yet lyrical, Siegel's prose reads like the bastard child of Dashiell Hammett and Georges Bataille. -- Las Vegas City Life, May 29, 2003

Nominated as Best First Novel of 2003. -- International Horror Guild

5.0 out of 5 stars A rock and roll magic book, November 30, 2002

This review is from: Echo and Narcissus (Paperback)
This is the kind of rock and roll novel every author wants to write; but Siegel's book is even BETTER because it incorporates so much more than just rock music. He has voodoo, gods, demons, drugs and more. All tucked between a killer cover. Looking forward to more good things by this author.
