The purpose of this publication is to present recent important clinical and experimental results in the area of echocardiography while at the same time detailing the stimulating discussions which took place between clinicians within this field of interest,at the above mentioned conference. Top experts in the field of echocardiography have put together this book which to a large extent encompasses all presently know aspects of cardiac ultrasound. The book is divided into seven main sections. Section one deals with a new ultrasound approach (intravascular echocardiography) and covers the full spectrum. Section two is devoted to new methods for the detection of myocardial ischemia. The third section deals with ultrasound assessment of therapeutic interventions, with a particular focus on the assessment of left ventricular function in patients with heart failure. The fourth section deals with the identification of viable myocardium in patients with myocardial infarction, while the fifth section is devoted to new insights in primitive and secondary myocardial hypertrophy. Section six covers the full spectrum of problems related to the clinical use of contrast echocardiography. All the advantages and problems of this new perfusinal technique are fully discussed. The seventh and final section is devoted to the presentation and discussion of new advances in cardiac ultrasounds.
