2.0 out of 5 stars Great if you like a focus on statistics...
I was disappointed to find the stories of Civil War reinactors regressed to Civil War lives to be a very small part of this book. The majority of this book focuses on statistics of these cases and others and the statistics are hashed and rehashed. This book reads like a thesis, which it was in fact, originally intended to be and I was hard pressed to finish it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating study!, January 13, 2000
This review is from: Echoes from the Battlefield: First Person Accounts of Civil War Past Lives (Paperback)

I have been recommending this book ever since it first came out in 1996. Why? Because it clearly demonstrates that, contrary to popular ideas of reincarnation and karma, we do not come back as the "opposite" of what we once were. The 12 people regressed by Dr. Lane were apparently attracted to Civil War renencting because it was FAMILIAR from the previous life. In other words, "like attracts like" from one life to the next.

Although there are some places where the book gets a bit repetitious, one cannot fault the careful examination of details and the enormous amount of historical research that went into this work. Most impressive were a number of instances where the past-life memories seemed "wrong" according to what the re-enactors thought they "should be," but were later shown to be accurate according actual historical records.

Another interesting point is that, although the subjects were quite knowledgeable about the Civil War while in the waking state, they were unable to predict the outcome of a battle when they were actually "in" the memories under hypnosis. Nor could they "change history" during the regression sessions as one might do in a dream or fantasy. This convinced me that these were not fantasies about the Civil War, but actual memories of having been there in another life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting views!, September 4, 2002

This review is from: Echoes from the Battlefield: First Person Accounts of Civil War Past Lives (Paperback)
Barbara Lane has taken several people that are for the most part reenactors or people absolutely hooked on the Civil War era and basically gave them a past life reading through hypnosis. Barbara Lane writes about each person she has regressed and also writes about their history, how they became interested in the Civil War and what they gained from being regressed or views about themselves. Many times they were shocked, or non-believers about the concept of being hypnotically regressed to go back to a past life and reveal situations of a life time that involved the Civil War era. How their lives in another life time were discussed to show how their lives are effected this time around. It was all very interesting. Reenactors and people interested in reincarnation would love this book as it offers further insight in to strange, but yet unusually accurate ideas about past lives. Who knows, if you love the Civil War, perhaps you were alive back then? Read this book to discover your similarities!

Mrs. Lane told the story so realistically that I could almost feel as if I were right there in the Civil War period. It brought it to life for me. I would definitely like to read more by this author!

I am impressed with Ms. Lanes research and eye for detail. Her astute flare for qualifing the past-life theory I found to be interesting and adventurous. She is a gifted writer and assiduous researcher. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's curiosity reaches into the realm of parapsychology.

At first this book was fascinating and believable, but as you progress it loses its momentum. Pretty soon all of the regressed patients have exactly the same story. Lots of shooting, smoke, fields, woods, and marching on and on and on. It seems to me that at least one or two of them should have a different experience.....anything different, but they are all the same. Makes you wonder.......

4.0 out of 5 stars Reincarnation Questionable, September 6, 2009
By
This review is from: Echoes from the Battlefield: First Person Accounts of Civil War Past Lives (Paperback)
Some reviews have sighted this material which is based on hypnotic regression as being proof of reincarnation. Science disavows reincarnation stating that 5 or more people have claimed to be Queen Elizabeth. They can't all be Queen Elizabeth, that would be absurd. But there is an explanation. When research was conducted on the names of the people with whom her subjects (Civil War reenactors) stated that they were those individuals really did exist. Even the town names and events mentioned were traceable. When the exploration of this information was taken one step further through genealogy it was determined that the individuals mentioned through/during hypnosis regression were actually ancestors of the subject (great, great grandfathers and such). Hence, memories of past events were being transmitted by genetic design. This doesn't rule out the possibility of reincarnation but definitely explains why different people who claim to be someone in a previous life (for which more than one person makes the same claim) may in fact just be genetically related to that individual. This may also explain why they have a fascination with reenacting events from that previous/historic era. The same held true for individuals who reenact Medieval themes. Something to ponder on!!!
