Book Description

April 15, 2005
Lappin's translations achieve remarkable semantic faithfulness without sacrificing the musicality of the verse. French text en face. This edition of Baudelaire includes an introduction, translator's forward, notes on each of the translations, and indexes and first lines in both French and English.

About the Author

Kendall Lappin evinced early on a strong affinity for the interplay of languages. After majoring in French and Spanish at DePauw University and achieving fluency in French a Middlebury College, he taught high school language courses until the outbreak of World War ll. Upon Graduation from the Navy's Japanese Language School in 1944, he served as a junior officer in the Pacific theater. At war's end he was assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy, to teach foreign languages to the midshipmen; soon thereafter he converted to civilian faculty status and made teaching at Annapolis his career, adding a Middlebury M.A. degree in Russian to his qualifications. Since his retirement in 1976 he has been active in literary translation-mostly poetry-from French to English.
