Editorial Reviews

Review

An autobiographical account of the development of HO2S … [this] compelling and most readable chronicle tells of the personal sacrifices, the setbacks, the dedication, and the overwhelming triumphs of those persons engaged in providing the means for the nation's fighting forces to achieve resounding success … should be read by everyone interested in the history of the 1939-1945 war.

Format: Hardcover
Like Bowen and Watson-Watt (see my reviews) Lovell played key part in wartime radar development, and like Bowen went into radio astronomy after 1945 (Jodrell Bank etc). Though tone of book dry it is therefore a valuable source for the technically-minded. As Lovell shows, H2S was vital to Allied bombing--even more so than "Oboe". No H2S no Hamburg, Dresden, but also more concentrated and genuinely strategic raids.

Lovell is trying to give not only technical detail, but a view of the administrative problems that beset a system that everbody wanted ASAP. Hidden in the mass of detail are the development of RADAR at shorter and shorter wavelengths, some of the things it was used for, and how some of the administratve bullheadedness complicated the actualization of the system. In reading this book, it is necessary to keep several threads in mind simultaneously. Fascinatig, but difficult.
