A new look at eclipses,
By Kelly Smith (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eclipse: A Journey to Darkness and Light (Paperback)
It was refreshing to read such passionate writing on eclipses--both the science behind them, and their effect on people's lives. I found Mr. Levy's journal of eclipses personally fascinating as well as informative.

A wonderful, human story,

I really enjoyed this book. Levy knows his facts, and best of all, he told an interesting story. I felt I was with him on the ship and sharing the time with him and the other eclipse watchers. I got to understand the fascination of eclipses and why they are special events. Good job!

After reading David Levy's piece in Parade Magazine, I was compelled to buy Eclipse. What a great book! I'm not hugely interested in science, but Levy's text is so accessible that I throughly enjoyed it.

A short, pleasant, informative book. Numerous typos, poor quality black and white photos.

A Little Too Sentimental,
By
This review is from: Eclipse: A Journey to Darkness and Light (Paperback)
David H. Levy (of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet that slammed into Jupiter in 1994) knows astronomy and he knows eclipses. He has been chasing them since he saw his first as a boy in 1963. The beginning of the book is insightful on the subject of Eclipses, but seemed to lack meat; I would like to have read more on not only the science behind eclipses, but also more on the human history surrounding eclipses.
Also, when the book gets to his and his families trip on the Regal Empress off the east coast of Canada to view the beginning of the eclipse in 1999 (The main subject of the book) Levy resorts to a great deal of sentimental statements and giddy quotes from his family and friends without giving any real in-depth insight into what they see during this eclipse. In all, I was a bit disappointed with this effort. >>>>>>><<<<<<< A Guide to my Book Rating System: 1 star = The wood pulp would have been better utilized as toilet paper. 2 stars = Don't bother, clean your bathroom instead. 3 stars = Wasn't a waste of time, but it was time wasted. 4 stars = Good book, but not life altering. 5 stars = This book changed my world in at least some small way. |
