Book Description

October 4, 2011
These days we're all seeking creative ways to protect our planet. "Eco Craft" delivers the goods in style with 30 truly beautiful home decor projects that elevate environmental consciousness to inspiring new heights. Every idea is amazingly clever: who would ever have imagined that plastic six-pack can holders could become a chic Moorish-inspired filigree tri-fold screen? Or that glass baby-food jars would make a charming candle chandelier? Every project features at least one beauty shot in a modern home setting and handy icons spotlight key techniques, materials and the estimated time to complete each one. Who knew taking care of the planet could look so good?

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* So many so-called green books are littered with sage statistics and alarmist statements but contain little to no practical, everyday ecological ideas. Colorado-based designer and Natural Home editor Wasinger quietly promotes her own brand of sustainability, starting with the materials (recycled paper with agri-based ink) used to fashion her 30-item craft collection. Everything here is fresh in terms of style, dynamic, and fairly easy to complete, thanks to the step-by-step color photographs, well-labeled directions, and notes to ensure a quality finished product. Skills are not difficult to acquire, whether it is simple cutting and taping or carpentry. Plus, the designs are impressive: bamboo trays, an old-suitcase given new life in “tray jolie,”and a six-pack screen that separates rooms, among many other items. Finally, the layout not only complements the author’s eco-theme but also calls attention to the important elements of the different crafts to make. Doing good was never so satisfying. --Barbara Jacobs --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I could not believe how cute and wonderful the projects were in this book. First of all, I fell in love with the screen which I thought was made from delicate, cut paper pieces. Then I absolutely ADORED the decorative bowls made from old paper pulp. I mean, how brilliant! I finally have a use for the beautiful scraps of paper left over from my scrapbooking which I just can't bear to get rid of!

And my jaw, if it was capable, would have literally hit the floor over the incredibly beautiful chandelier (YES, chandelier!) made from baby food jars and wire and old barrel hoops... I mean, it's enough to make me try to hunt down old barrel hoops and take a fan out of one of my rooms to make room for it!

I honestly couldn't believe how awesome each project was. I also feel like getting my hands on some bamboo now to make trays!!! What great drawer dividers in themselves, besides the cute paper mache ones she makes out of old takeout box lids...

I just have to stop writing now because I'd keep writing for forever and never get to making my hanging lamp out of a cut up milk carton...

Over 30 green projects inspire crafters to turn 'trash' into stylish home accessories with ECO CRAFT, a survey of creative ideas, step-by-step photos, and environmentally conscious projects. From a cd-case towel rack that does double duty as a photo display to a tray made from a discarded suitcase and dresser handles, this is a winning presentation perfect for any crafter's collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll Never View "Trash" the Same January 3, 2013

I was hopeful that I'd find a book that would contain some interesting upcycling projects. Most books and projects I've seen look like kids' craft projects.....fun but nothing you really keep or use. These projects are items I'd actually be proud to have in my home. This book was absolutely inspirational.... so inspirational, in fact, that I sent a copy to one sister, and am getting ready to ship another copy to my other sister. The projects are beautiful...using items that I would never have considered using. The only negative comment that I have was that I ended up wanting more.

The winter months can be kind of a bummer, but this book really got me motivated -- I've already started 2 projects.... her ideas are fantastic and leave plenty of room for artistic license.

Pros: Good looking objects that you could use for home decor, or selling online; Very inspirational! You will rethink what you throw in your recycling bin! I've always kept solid metal objects, metal scrap, etc., but would never think to reuse cheap plastic grocery bags -- but Susan shows you how to make them into thick, functional lamp shades.

Cons: I would never use office staples or cheap glue to assemble an object when I could wire or solder something, but then again, that also inspired me to think of different ways to assemble some of the projects.

I hope that Susan will write another book soon. I'd love to see what else she's come up with. My sisters and I will post photos as we complete our projects.

I bought this for a friend, but liked it so much I bought another for myself. It has clear directions and the objects are sophisticated instead of hokey-looking. I have been really enjoying making plastic clamshells into dividers. There's something very satisfying about making something pretty out of junk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas! February 10, 2013
Format:Paperback
Even if you don't do all of the projects in this book - it really broadens your idea about how beautiful "trash" can be. It has inspired me to make even more beautiful, less expected crafts and gifts just because her ideas help me see things in a new way. I'd recommend this to anyone ready to get started making lovely, worthwhile practical decor.
