Naturalness of Product,
By
This review is from: Eco-Dent (formerly Merflaun) Toothpowder (Health and Beauty)
I checked with the makers of the product about the critique posted here of their ingredients' naturalness. I am not a chemist, but I don't think one can evaluate some of the ingredients in isolation; their naturalness or potential toxicity depends on how they are combined, because the ingredients used do occur naturally in nature (as per my initial research on the internet which confirms this). Anyway, the response I got from the maker is this:Unfortunately information found on the internet is extremely inaccurate, and in many cases misleading as in the current instance. This is derived from coconut and is a surfactant as you note. ALL surfactants have the job of lifting dirt from a surface, and they can be applied to just about any purpose, depending on the concentration used. Thus, it is the same surfactant used for cleaning floors in many cases as in making a shower gel, a shampoo or a tooth cleaning product, whether toothpowder or toothpaste. This fact does not either speak to appropriate use or naturalness of the surfactant. It is purely the chemistry of surfactants. The second issue is "nitrosating" agent. This however is untrue for this surfactant UNLESS it is combined with another surfactant that we do not use. The science of formulation of products involves a lot of details that are not generally popularized on the internet as they involve far too technical issues. This ingredient was widely researched before being used. Since we do not combine this ingredient with the other ingredient that could cause it to become a "nitrosating agent", in fact, on its own it is NOT a nitrosating agent. Thus, the issue you raise does not arise. This particular surfactant was chosen for its considered safe and effective properties in comparison with other surfactants such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate which have far higher concerns. It is considered so safe in fact that Whole Foods Market considers it a "premium" ingredient and recommends products that use it in their "premium" program. This distinction is reserved for products that use the safest and best ingredients only and is a select group.

This tooth powder effectively remineralizes teeth! It has improved mine significantly- gotten rid of sensitivity and helped shrink brown spots where enamel was disappearing (very scary). Also, vitamin K2 (in conjunction with calcium and D3) is essential for anyone wishing to strengthen bones and teeth... The whitening version of this tooth powder whitened my teeth dramatically. I was contemplating getting my teeth whitened professionally but I'm very happy I didn't- this was all that was needed. It was like getting a new set teeth. As far as taste, I had no problem with it. First, I don't actually enjoy the taste of conventional toothpastes. Second, taste isn't the primary reason I'm putting this in my mouth and brushing my teeth. Cinnamon is probably my favorite flavor. LemonLime is pretty intense. Overall, excellent product that does what it claims. Very, very thankful for it.

It is the best oral dentafrice that I have ever used. Nothing even comes close to the way it makes your mouth and teeth feel. One additional benefit is it doesn't have to be put in a one quart plastic baggie like toothpaste for someone who flies a lot with carry on baggage.

Decieving...,
By This product is marketed as a natural alternative to more main-stream toothpastes which often contained harmful chemicals. However, if you inspect the ingredient list of Eco-Dent DailyCare, you will find that its third ingredient is Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate. Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate is a Nitrosating agent. Nitrosating agents can cause nitrosamine contamination, which has been determined to form cancer in laboratory animals. There are wide and repeated concerns in the USA and Europe about the contamination of cosmetics products with nitrosamines. Also, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate is an Anionic sufactant. Several sufactants have been identified as toxic to humans and ecosystems. Further, they can increase the diffusion of other environmental contaminants, with which they are often mixed. Despite this, sufactants commonly used in car washes, as garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers - and in 90% of personal-care products that foam. So, if you are buying this tooth-care product as a means of protecting yourself from the potentially harmful effects of chemicals included in many other toothpastes, it may be best to avoid this product as well. Perhaps you can try making your own tooth-care powder by mixing baking soda, salt, and some pleasant essential oil. You might save some money that way as well.

Here's How to Use This to Great Effect,
By Laura Christine "Jewel of Zion" (Toledo, OH) - See all my reviews I have abandoned fluoride-containing toothpastes due to their toxic health effects. Fluoride blocks the body's absorption of iodine, which is vital to proper thyroid function. So how do I re-mineralize and harden my tooth enamel? I do brush with a non-fluoride toothpaste, and then I floss. Then I sprinkle some Eco Dent on my tongue, add some filtered water, then swish the resulting solution around through my mouth. This gives my teeth a remarkable flawless-to-the-naked-eye surface. Better yet, my sensitivity has now subsided. If you are in a hurry and don't have time to brush, swishing this solution around will at least give your teeth proper ammunition against the day's onslaught of sugar. All the better that you will not have a problem getting this toothpaste substitute through airport security. Although it appears to be a small bottle, a little goes a long way. On a per-use basis it is actually a bargain.

It cleans well,
I started using this product about a month ago. Its description on the bottle is accurate. Some people might find difficult to put powder on the brush, but I got used to it very quickly.

This review is from: Eco-Dent Daily Care Baking Soda Toothpowder, Anise, 2 oz (56 g) (Health and Beauty)
After getting more and more conscious (and knowledgeable) about my health, it was a natural progression to give up on commercial tooth pastes. I found this powder excellent. I love the anise flavor as well. It's easy to use and will last for really long.

Wanted the lightest weight possible for backpacking. Eco-dent worked well packed in a tiny ziplock bag using the top part of a toothbrush. It worked better than just plain baking soda as it had a mint flavor and better texture.
