Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Ecological awareness is increasing as we enter the "environmental decade." Not surprisingly, the concerns of ecology and spirituality intersect in the material world in which we all live. Indeed, for some, ecology has become a new religion. As this book emphasizes, everything is part of the web of life, and the mechanistic/scientific worldview of past decades is fast waning in the epoch of environmental crisis. Now science itself is writing the "new story of the universe," and finding it uncannily difficult to negate the presence of a Creator. Eco-spirituality sees the image of God in all of creation and consequently reveres life and the wonder and mystery of the sacred. The author maintains that nothing less than a spiritual and social revolution is needed to heal the unjust and exploitative behavior toward the Earth's resources. This succinctly argued theological solution to the "groaning of creation" is recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Eco-Friendly Christianity, March 19, 2000
By "imearthbound" (Southern CA) - See all my reviews
I enjoyed reading Charlse Cummings' book ,"Eco-Spirituality. It is ever so hard to find any books that combine non-dogmatic Christianity with basic spirituality that it themed on the appreciation of God's creation through nature and Mr. Cummings does a good job in this book of briefly explaining all the different major Judeo-Christian religious movements in America and how they either helped or hindered their listeners from appreciating God's wonders through nature and he does so honestly and plainly without coming off as sectarin to any precise denomination. Rare and refreashing is that fact that Mr. Cummings' offer's the reader the best of both worlds in that he shares his views in a personal and yet non-hell bent God AND a natural appreciation of the natural world that enhances this. The only draw back I personally see in his expressed views is that he sees the restoration hope expressed in Revelation 21:1 and 2, the Psalms, Isaiah and 2 Peter as only symbolic. other than this, it is a fine and well written book.
