I started this review to point out that you are supposed to fill with your own dirt and ants. Every other insect kit we've gotten has had a postcard or some way to order. We have lots of fire ants in the summer, other than that I have no idea what kind of ants we could find. The instruction book also offers different recipes for whether you have herbivores or carnivores/omnivores, but no pictures/explanation on how to tell. I tried making one, but it never solidified and ended up getting moldy in the food area. My son received a gel ant farm at the same time so we hooked them together with one of the side tubes, so they at least had that to eat.

We ordered an ant kit with sand from Uncle Milton? I think. The tubing to the lagoon was a little too wide and too slippery, any ant who went down had a struggle getting back - you might try putting some loose sand in there before adding ants. The lagoon ended up being decoration only for any ants who actually made it up the steep climb through the slick tubing somehow fell off into the water (luckily ants float) instead of walking across the little bridges. Also, there are no plugs if you choose not to use the tubing on the sides to connect the top and bottom ports - I cut off q-tip ends and taped them in place.

We will use this again, but without bothering with the lagoon. I liked the sand better than the gel colony, it is easier to see the ants moving the sand around. I gave it three stars when I started and don't seem to be able to change it now, would reduce to 2 for the expense of the lagoon which is unusable.
