Ok so admittedly I was like most others were/will be. I removed the old filter and screwed this one in. Water all over the place, leaking, and was mad and getting ready to return. After I came back and read more reviews about "filling the filter with water first" I looked on the box and yes, the instructions are there to do that lol. So I did this, filling it slowly and tapping until no more bubbles were rising to the top. Repeated the process of insertion, and it did not leak at all except a slight amount of initial spillage but this time I had a towel under it. I'm guessing the air in the cartage was causing the spray back. Ran 3 gallons through and watered the plants with it. 4 stars instead of five, because although I can't tell between a taste test of tap and the filtered water, I live in San Diego and my tap water doesn't have any chlorine taste to begin with. However, I can tell that the filter media in this cartridge isn't as dense because the water comes out much faster, and the LCD screen that counts cups dispensed was undercounting by about 50% (to be fair, I don't recall if it was perfectly accurate with the previous GE cartage, but seems faster flow). If you're like me and want generally "cleaner" water and to stop the damn fridge from beeping, and don't want to use an old cartridge forever because you know they probably get all kinds of crap built up in them, I think this is a solid choice just follow the directions. Note, I dumped all my old ice and will wait a day or two for new ice to cycle through - I'm curious if the (possibly?) faster flow would mess things up down there? If I don't update this review, it definitely means it didn't so go ahead and buy the thing. PS - going through my fridge menu to reset the cartridge, it had instructions on it that said the same exact thing about filling cartridge with water first, so it seems to be a standard procedure with GE brand as well and not just with this model ;)

Does absolutely nothing. Water quality equal to tap water.

I replaced a 1 year old authentic GE filter with this. I did a taste test and used a TDS meter to measure dissolved solids.
Upon opening the box, the EcoAqua filter distinctly lighter than the old GE filter. As though it didn't have as much filter media inside.

I replaced the filter, confirmed no leaks (a common problem others reported), and flushed several gallons of water through it. During flushing I noticed there was significantly more water flow through the EcoAqua filter than the GE filter. Another notch for the "not much media inside" theory.

TDS Tests:
Tap water: 225 ppm
1year old GE filter: 180 ppm (expected)
New EcoAqua filter: 215 ppm

Taste Test: The old GE filtered water tasted crisper and had less "flavor" than tap. The EcoAqua filtered water tasted just like tap water.

I'm tempted to cut the EcoAqua filter in half to see what's inside. My guess is that it really is hollow! Back to the seller it goes.

Many of the reviews on this product are not very detailed so I hope this helps to clear things up. First I bought this filter for a GE profile fridge to replace a GSWF filter and it fits and works. At half of the cost of a GE filter I thought it was worth the risk since Amazon has a great return policy.

Second it is important to note that this filter and any aftermarket GSWF compatible filter I have seen does not meet the same filtration standards as the GE brand. Specifically the GE brand filter meets NSF standards 42 (taste) and 53 (health) and aftermarket filters only meet standard 42 (taste). Please do your own research on these topics and the quality of your tap water and decide yourself. If I had any doubt's about my tap water I would use the GE filter.

Third many of these reviews mentioned that instructions recommended to presoak the filter, my instructions did not say this on the box or insert. I did rinse the filter so any loose carbon did not enter my fridge water piping and I suggest this for all water filters in fridge and pitchers.

Finally the installation was a little tricky. When I unboxed the filter I was happy to see the seal but unhappy to see the rubber gasket stuck to the seal when I peeled it off. This gasket is necessary to prevent leakage so look out for this gasket and put it back in place. After installation my filter did leak immediately so I had to remove the gasket and realign it and the leaking stopped.

Bottom line this filter seems to be a great replacement for GE. The water flow seems to be the same and taste is fine. I would like to see a better quality gasket so I give it 4 stars but I will buy another in 6 months if there are no issues.

Bought as a replacement for GE GSWF. This filter did not fit quite right and we didn't realize it until water shot out everywhere from the filter. Our filter is inside the fridge at the top, so we had a lot of water to clean up. I don't know if it is defective or just not actually a match for the GE GSWF.

Since this was purchased from a third party vendor through Amazon, now I am struggling to return the item. They didn't answer when I called them as directed by Amazon, and I called within office hours.

We installed this last night, following all the directions. After running way more than the suggested 2-3 gallons through it, our drinking water smells worse than what comes out of the tap and the taste is terrible. We have poor water quality where we are currently renting and have tried various kinds of filtration devices (brita pitcher, pur sink attachment which did not fit our funky fixture properly) to avoid buying bottled water. The best I've found, unfortunately, is the brand name filter which this one was replacing and which actually worked well. I prefer not to buy GE products but can't think of any other good options.
