I'm a little paranoid about fire, and brooder lamps are notorious for starting them. So when I found this, I decided it was a must have. It's a snug fit for 50 chicks after the first couple of weeks, but they seem to love it. Importantly, they are healthy, happy, active - exactly what I need/want. When I'm brooding chicks in cold weather, will probably need to rely on a standard brooder light when they pass 3-4 weeks old. In the summer it's not an issue. Love it.

update: one year on.
Note that no parts are available. The legs are willie-wanka style plastic screws, the height of the brooder (and therefore the heat) are controlled by using the screw legs to adjust the height. I'm clumsy, and managed to break one of the legs - turns out, this makes the entire investment close to worthless. I checked with the company - they expressed doubt that they could get me parts, and then didn't follow through on their promise to call me back.

Right now I have one corner of the brooder propped up, but this is a pretty lame way to use it. Given the high cost of this unit, I wouldn't buy one again. Ironically, if they could have sold me the parts I'd have bought a second. Currently have several flocks totaling about 400 birds, all raised from chicks. I got past my fear of fire, found well made brooder lights at a fraction of the cost.

It's possible to raise chicks and not have chick loss, pasty butt, and sweaty nightmares of too cold, too hot brooder temps! Plug it in, adjust the legs for desired height, after you dip your chicks place them under, repeat. I use a LED red light in brooder hood over the food & water so chicks can easily find it. Place water closest to Brinsea. It absorbs some heat. After years of stressing & hovering over new chicks for weeks, I can honestly say all my worries are over regarding temperature. Monitor, teach the slow learners where to find heat & water/food, but enjoy! (p.s. I raise 50-100 Heritage layers a year. 1 LG Brinsea for every 50 or less chicks) worth every penny!!!
