Product Description

Ecotech Marine VorTech Propeller MP40 Pump w/ Wireless EcoSMART Driver features a new magnet, high performance plastic drive shaft screw, a revised wet frame cover and is fully backwards compatible with all VorTech pumps. The new magnet is fully encapsulated within black plastic, cannot be scratched or damaged under normal use, is more durable, eliminates rusting and requires no regularly scheduled replacements. Features for the MP40 include: -Long Pulse Mode allows for wave pulse timings of between 2 and 60 seconds, enabling you to create slow alternating flow throughout your tank. And, you can couple multiple masters and slaves to create spiraling or gyre flow too! -A new Night Mode - one of the most sought after enhancements - enables you to set your pump to operate for 14 hours in whichever mode you select for the day and go back to Night Mode for 10 hours. Master pumps will tell their slaves to go into Night Mode as well. Your Night Mode setting will be stored for as long as you want or until you cycle power to the pump, at which point you simply program the Night Mode again. -A Pump Disconnect feature automatically shuts down your pump if the dry and wet sides become separated. Enhancements to existing modes include: -Feed Mode has been slowed from 1000gph to 500gph to make it easier than ever for you to spot feed corals and slow moving fish in your tank with the push of a button. -A modified range of adjustment for Short Pulse Mode makes it easier for you to fine tune wave form. -A novel save function for Pulse Mode enables you to save your own fine-tuned wave, providing you an even higher level of customization, and preventing you from ever having to re-program a wave again. -A more sporadic Reef crest Mode for both single pump systems and multi pump systems enables more pronounced speed changes constantly throughout the day -A more sporadic Lagoon Mode for both single pump systems and multi pump systems.

I got my MP40W ES a few day ago so I decided I would do a multi stage review on it, I am going to start at my day one experience and come back and add more as the Months Pass.

If you're looking at the Vortech you most likely fall into one of four categories:

1) You hate seeing Wires or man made items in your tank
2) You want a Wave type action in your tank without lifts and buckets
3) You always buy the best for your aquarium
4) You got Cash to blow!

I can also guess that you have probably read up and watched a bunch of YouTube videos and reviews about Vortech pumps.

First let me say the Vortech's are the best made pumps you can buy, they have tremendous flow and are nicely designed. With that said let me address some of my little gripes and the over hype about Vortech's pumps.

(Day One)

When I got mine and opened the Amazon shipping Box my first reaction was Wow Vortech uses a nice looking box for their pumps. Then I opened the box and my draw dropped and my anger swelled as I looked at a jumbled bunch of parts thrown in the box like it was packed by a two year old. I had expected nice foam inserts holding the Pump and controller, at $450 dollars I think it's fair that you should expect that, so my first reaction was that the seller had shafted me and sent me a used pump. Luckily I decided to go on YouTube and find an unboxing video before I vented and to my surprise this was the Normal packing style for a Vortech! (LOL first time one of those videos has been useful).
So I give Vortech two big thumbs down on the internal packaging.

The second let down was the Manual or should I say lack of.

This power head/wave maker is definitely worth the money. It has replaced all internal pumps and powerheads in my 36 long tank. Because most of the unit is located outside of the tank, where all the heat is dissipated, my tank has also dropped quite a few degrees- which i had been trying to achieve for quite a while.

its reasonably quite, the slight noise is nothing to complain about.

one thing. i purchased the wireless device "wES". its doesn't mean there are no wires! it means it can control other units wirelessly. I never had any intention of buying another one for my 30gallon. so if you plan on buying only one. dont pay extra for the wES model.

do it.

I have an MP10 and an MP40 and they are amazing. No comparison to regular powerheads. The detritus that was stirred up when they were first turned on was incredible. The syncing is very easy and works very well. The only complaint I have, and I mean only, is they do make a little noise. No way you could put them on a tank in your bedroom and not hear them all night. If you set it to the really turblent moded where they pulse then its pretty loud if you turn them up to 100% on the flow. at 25% its not bad, but at 100% you can really hear them. I jsut don't use that mode except once in a while to really stir the tank up. Probably would need to turn the % down to use the really turbulent mode because it sloshes water around big time.

Great product though.

When I set up my tank, I got some "whip" soft corals thrown in with the live rock for free. They were kind of unattractive, with small brown polyps coming out of a brown branch--looked like a bumpy tree branch.

Well, I got my vortech powerhead and put it into wave mode, and scrolled the little dial back and forth until I got a maximal standing wave of about 1/2" -- pretty good for my 6' long tank, I thought.

I guess the corals did too. About three days later, the polyps on the whip coral expanded fully. I had no idea that they were 1/2" long! Now my whip coral almost looks like a cattail! Apparently, it really likes waving back and forth in the "wind" the wave sets up in the tank. The fish seem happier, all the corals have their polyps fully extended, and the whip corals waving back and forth always causes interest at parties.

The pump is 4" from the surface of the water, and I have a shallow tank, so it moved some sand around AND still occasionally sucks air from the surface. My tank has had some algae problems, even with the large amount of water movement, so I'm considering getting a second pump and increasing the flow even more. Of course, when I get a little bit of slime algae, it encourages the water changes I really should do anyway, so it's not all bad... :)

Absolutely great pump for soft corals, or hard corals with long polyps. I had about a square foot of xenia that would pulse and all wave back and forth--it was great, until it became four square feet of xenia....

Unbelievable polyp extension. Very cool.

After more than a decade with a reef aquarium, I learned that high water flow inside the tank is critical maintaining a beautiful tank over the long term (wave motion, even better). I used to run an Iwaki 1200GPH return pump so I could have enough flow to keep the corals swaying. I didn't want to add powerheads inside the tank because of limited space and aesthetics. Now I finally tried the VorTech MP10WES. This thing is AMAZING! I love it! It is small, looks nice in the tank, and so far reliable and maintenance-free. This little pump is quite strong for its size. The controller is fun to play with because it has so many microprocessor controlled settings to simulate natural reef waves. Today I swapped out the 1200GPH return pump with a much smaller one, and I added another MP10WES and synced them using the wireless feature. "Random Reed Crest" mode is what most experts use, with anti-sync for the slave pump. The corals love it. I am so glad I bought this!
