Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 6-- This is truly a comprehensive source book . It begins with art-and-craft supplies made from natural objects and materials, and ends with recycling and composting. It's all here: bark, twigs, pebbles, weeds, prints, plants, and feeders. There is nothing totally new, but the broad scope and organization of projects in related groups with step-by-step, single-page directions make the book a first purchase. Drawings are clear and relate well to the text. Carlson indicates the level of difficulty of each activity with a symbol, and uses a clock to indicate when more than one hour is needed to finish (most require less than an hour). The style is breezy and chatty, and includes occasional tidbits of interest related to the project being described. With its large format and large type, this is a very easy book to use. --Carole B. I have just entered the field of preschool and was disappointed in the books for activities until I found Carlson. Her book isn't full of kiddie graphics as if the kids were reading, her instructions are clear and careful. This book is fun because it gives so many ideas of using things around the house. I liked this book so much that I bought 50 to give to preschool teachers coming to a workshop. If you like to do things with your young children and someone doesn't give you Carlson's books, buy them.

This book is filled with explicit instructions on many facinating projects. It is clear, concise and easy to understand. Excellent resource for children and teachers.

Laurie, I just finished this book and I really appreciated it. My daughter is soon to be three and I have been wanting to learn more about environmentally friendly ways to teach her about life and our world. This is a super resource for me. Thank you so much!!

A friend gave me this book and it's just not for us. While the ideas are based in nature or recycling in some way, lots of them require quite a bit of process, mess (mix sand, cornstarch and water in one of my saucepans) or strange items (like a loom, gourd, photo fixer or a hand drill) that you might not have laying around and have to make or buy. Also, most of the end product are not practical for indoors and you have to think about where this stuff is going to be after made.

Ok having said that, there are a few ideas that are decent and the book lay out is in easy instructions and nice chapters with detailed instructions and illustrations.

This book has a lot of really cute ideas, but I found many of them impractical. I bought the book thinking I could use the activities in my classroom, however, as another commenter mentioned, many of the ideas call for some obscure supplies and can get expensive. Additionally, many of the ideas are better for the 9 year olds than the 3 year olds.

Nice book - filled with great ideas for a lot of "around the house" materials. Particularly like the DIY materials like paste & clay - safe, eco-friendly and big savings on buying premade ones. I also like that it covers things for toddlers-older kids. As a homeschooling family this is a great resource for project and material ideas. Well worth it!

I just remembered this book the other day and decided to see if I could find it online. I'm 23 now, but I really loved this book when I was a kid. My grandfather got it for me when I was maybe 5 or 6 and I continued to use it until I was about 9 years old. I have a lot of memories of working on projects from this book. I really liked making things out of anything I could find. If there was some toy I really wanted, but couldn't have, I'd try to make it instead. From a kid's perspective, I definitely recommend this book. This book, and some other books like it really challenged me creatively from a young age and as an artist and I still benefit from it today.
