Book Description

June 1997 0253330319 978-0253330314
Here the potential strengths and weaknesses of the growing eco-feminist movement are critically assessed by scholars in a variety of academic disciplines and vocations, including anthropology, biology, chemical engineering, education, political science, recreation and leisure studies, sociology, and political organizing. Writers explore the real-life concerns that have motivated eco-feminism as a grassroots, women-initiated movement around the globe; the appropriateness of ecofeminism to academic and scientific research; and philosophical implications and underpinnings of the movement. The new perspectives on theory and practice outlined in this collection highlight the power and promise of eco-feminism. The contributors include Candice Bradley, Douglas J. Buege, Adrienne Elizabeth Christiansen, Deane Curtin, Wendy Donner, Karen Marsten Fox, Susan Griffin, Lori Gruen, Petra Kelly, Ruthanne Kurth-Schai, Wendy Lee-Lampshire, Gretchen T. Legler, Joseph R. Loer, Judith Plant, Val Plumwood, Eliane Potiguara, Robert Alan Sessions, Andy Smith, Charlene Spretnak, Noel Sturgeon, Dorceta E. Taylor, Karen J. Warren, Betty Wells, Holly L. Wilson, Danielle Wirth, and Catherine Zabinski.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Text, April 4, 2009
By
This text has provided me with an excellent grounding in the field of ecofeminism. The selection of essays included provide a nice range of the various ways ecofeminism is represented in the disciplines and used politically in society. The essays themselves are very clearly written and I found their bibliographies especially helpful in leading me to other more specific sources on the particular foci within this umbrella topic.

In particular, I really valued the inclusion of the following selections: Ecofeminism through an Anticolonial Framework (interesting critique of general feminism and a nice example of a politically motivated piece); Ecofeminist Literary Criticism (great bibliography and linkage to other theoretical pieces); and Androcentrism and Anthrpocentrism.

I would definitely recommend this text to anyone wanting an introductory overview of ecofeminism.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in ecofeminist theory. It contains a collection of essays by various authors on ecological problems and how those problems are linked to the oppression of minorities. It contains empirical data to back claims and provides a clear convincing argument for the movement.
