The Ecology of Fynbos: Nutrients, Fire and Diversity [Hardcover]

R.M. Cowling (Editor)

Out of Print--Limited Availability.

Book Description

January 1, 1998
South Africa's Cape Floristic region includes approximately 8500 plant species. Most of this biodiversity is concentrated in fynbos, a fire-prone shrubland occurring on the sandy, infertile soils which predominate in this region. This book reviews a decade of rigorous research into the biogeography, ecology and management of fynbos, carried out under the auspices of the Fynbos Biome Project.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'It is the last property of the subtitle, the diversity, that particularly recommends this book over the average well-written treatise on a local vegetation type. The facts, as laid out in early chapters are impressive. Throughout this book much fascinating natural history is explained, and interesting data are discussed. It deserves a wide readership.' Paul H. Zedler, San Diego University, Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Vol. 8, No. 5, May 1993

'the editor of this book, made a wise decision by including a section of beautiful colour plates of the fynbos biome ... This photographic essay is a nice addition to the scientific data presented in this book ... Despite the wide variety of topics covered in this book, it shows great coherency. The literature cited in the various chapters is ... up-to-date ... the authors and the editor did an excellent job in producing a good book on the ecology of a very fascinating biome. I recommend this book to everyone who is interested in causes and consequences of patterns in species diversity and community structure, and in the management of species-rich, nutrient-poor ecosystems.' Rien Aerts, Utrecht, The Netherlands
