Book Description

October 18, 2000 0761817883 978-0761817888
How do mobilization for war and the actual war effort affect the environment? How do ecological conditions encourage war? What are possible, non-violent solutions to the ecological- conflict dynamic? Ecology of War & Peace attempts to answer these questions in readable prose with an unapologetic bias toward non-violence.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book contains an excellent analysis of ways in which ideas about justice can enter the negotiation process. (Janna Thompson, La Trobe University Pacifica Review)

Many features of this book are worthy of praise. Hastings' concern for humankind and passion for environmental and social justice are unquestionable. (Ecsp Report)

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible! May 1, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Unfortunately, I'm currently taking a class with the author and he required we read his book. It is an extremely biased piece of writing. The scholarship is poor and the research is questionable. The author is extremely antagonistic, defensive and sarcastic if you merely question some of his views.
As an objective, academic author, he completely fails. This is, perhaps, the worse piece of writing I've ever read. I'd rate it a zero if I could. It frequently denigrates into wild ramblings, specious reasonings and arguments that appear to be no more than conspiracy theories.
As an educator, he is an even bigger failure. His motives seem to be: indoctrination of others into his beliefs. I frequently feel as though I'm being taught by a zealous, evangelical preacher.
Ironically, he is a Conflict Resolution instructor, yet he fails at resolving conflict and excels at initiating it.
It makes me sad that he is a position where he could influence young people because I'm sure that over the years, he has recruited followers.
This book is going in the garbage when I'm done with the class. I would not resell this crap to anyone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly Written and Insubstantial April 2, 2010
Format:Hardcover
This text is highly biased and unrealistic, written more as a pamphlet attempting to persuade you a certain direction (like the Christian Science pamphlets you get in the mail), rather than as an informative text. While he fully admits his bias, it is very frustrating as a student - there is no objectivity here, and the writing is sub par, even incomprehensible at times. It comes off as hippie-like ranting rather than any sort of educational material, which is too bad. He is an intelligent and dedicated man, but lets his overzealousness interfere with his duties as an educator and with his writing... this book is painful to read and leaves you nothing substantial at the end of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative February 21, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I am also a student in Mr. Hastings class, and yes the book is biased but it is written to be that way. This book overwhelms you with a bombardment of well documented facts that make you truly look again at the cost of war preparation on the part of the United States of America. This book brings to light the atrocities done to our environment and those inhabiting it, in the name of peace keeping and the Department of Defense. The book forces you to rethink our current method of conflict resolution and challenges us to come up with a better model. There is something in here everybody can learn from.
