The aims of this book are: to provide a guide to the nature, uses, availability and limitations of the main data sources for interpreting and undertaking local and regional studies of economic activity and land use in the United Kingdom; and to examine the methods of collecting information on these topics, the geographic information systems used for storing and analyzing the data, and the range of techniques used to forecast local and regional economic change. The book is divided into three sections. The first section examines data on different measures of economic activity and land use, the second section analyzes methods of monitoring economic activity and land use, and the third section assesses the data available on different economic sectors. This book is intended for a wide ranging "semi-professional" audience, including consultants, market research workers and business people concerned with local and regional economic development and land use; planners annd economic development officers in local and central government; research workers and undergraduates in business, economics, geography and planning; and reference librarians and others wanting a critical guide to the nature and uses of data sources on economic activity and land use in the United Kingdom.
