"Economic Collapse, Economic Change" is an excellent primer on the current state of the U.S. economy, written from a left perspective. The authors are frequent contributors to "Dollars and Sense," one of the best economic magazines in the U.S.

The core of the book is a retelling of the financial and ideological excesses that led to the current mess. The basic thesis is that decades of wage stagnation have resulted in chronic weak demand in the U.S. economy. The Fed used low interest rates to counter this tendency in the 2000s. It hoped to restore growth. Instead, the easy money policy led to massive levels of debt and a disastrous housing bubble, which plunged the economy into recession when it burst. So described, "Economic Collapse, Economic Change" may sound like one more quickie book on the financial crisis, but it isn't. The account of the 2000s is embedded in a wider discussion of globalization, the ideology of de-regulation, the decline of unions, and the outlook for progressive reform. The book has lasting value.

Near the end there's an amazing graph that shows the close inverse correlation between unionization levels and income inequality in the U.S. This graph should be reproduced in every classroom in the country. Great stuff.

If you want a great explanation of the Financial Crisis-this is THE book-whether you're a staunch Union supporter or a Wall St professional.

I've worked on Wall St for over 15 years and although it's written from the "left" point of view and I may disagree with their solutions for "change" (which begs the question "why would I read this book?" I just love economics-that's it), their account of what happened (which is most of the book) is one of the best I've read.

Economic Collapse, Economic Change is a wonderful and accurate account of how "we got here." I was pleasantly surprised at how MacEwan and Miller were able to provide a balanced view. Most of the other books and/or articles I've read about the recent crisis are far too narrow-tending to blame a single event or industry for the whole thing. MacEwan's and Miller's book is well rounded and does an excellent job at tying together history and finance-that this crisis was the culmination of many things.

For those who think finance needs to be boring and complex-this book proves it does not!

For understanding the economic collapse of the bond-CDO-Chinese consumer loan fiasco, this text seems to meet everything I knew and more. Short of Zeitgeist the movies, this text is slightly more provable by the common student, therefore believable for sourcing. Accuracy is paramount to good writing. I will reread this text and watch the Z. movies again.

This is the book I've been looking for. Concisely and thoroughly explaining the global crisis caused by free market capitalism obsession with deregulation and diminishing the strength of organized labor. A must read!
