The evolution from plunder by raids to plunder by trade began 800 to 1,000 years ago in the Free Cities of Europe. In a properly established banking system, through adjustments in rquired reserves rather than changing interest rates, there need be no inflations or deflaitons. Created debt-free money can build most infrastructure, increasing required reserves in step with that money creation maintains a stable money supply. A proper banking structure can stop an economic collapse in its tracks. It can also rapidly industrialize undeveloped regions of the world. That proper banking structure, along with eliminating all other monopolies can reduce the workweek to 2 to 3 days per week with no loss of food, fiber, or shelter. World poverty can be eliminated in 10 years and a quality life for all can be attained in 50 years. .

About the Author

J.W. Smith, with a PhD in Environmental Economics from Union Institute and University, Cleveland, Ohio has written six books on the elimination of poverty and war. Middle class Americans, who have labored so long under the tyrannical illusion of the so-called "American Dream", should treat this book as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to free themselves from the burden of failed expectations, and rediscover their hope for a better future. For those of you who think you know enough about economics already, do yourself a huge favor and read this book, if you're up to having your tidy little world turned upside down. Why? Because it ruthlessly parses the pernicious canard at the heart of traditional neo-liberal economic theory - private property rights. Even more importantly, it includes a comprehensive, practical guide for the evolution of our current capitalist system into a more humane and just one, one that would provide a means for everyone, regardless of education or race or status, to prosper within. And this is great news at a time when the sub-prime crisis threatens to drown us in a full-blown depression.

If a person likes densely packed critical historical and contemporary economic facts about the development of capitalism, they will enjoy this book. It outdoes even The Shock Doctrine. Smith organizes these facts in terms of the Green economic philosophy of Henry George. (George was the American, nonMarxist land value theorist whose work is the basis of the Green Party's economic and environmental positions.)

This is an excellent, a very comprehensive study of the subject.
The logical and mathematical detail provided and the
specific instances sited make it well worth not just reading but
carefully studying and retaining as a reference source on the
very pragmatic side of these subjects, not just as they are presently
found but how they must evolve if life on this planet is to evolve as
it should.
