This review is from: Economic Inequality and Income Distribution (Paperback)
Income inequality is a persistent feature of moder capitalism. (Arguably, it has been a feature of every society we have known - arguably.) Furthermore, inequality appears to have been increasing over the past 3 or 4 decades both domestically and globally. Yet, economics has insisted that we are simply observing differences in attributes and preferences. Champernowne and Cowell's book is the only comprehensive work that tackles the subject head-on: discussing the shortcomings (and virtues) of the conventional story, as well as modifications and alternative explanations that reconcile some of the discrepancies between theory and empirics. While the coverage is very broad, the book also provides a very comprehensive bibliography allowing the reader to deepen their exploration of any of the models and theories discussed. It is a superb and useful piece of academic research on a subject that deserves considerably more attention!
