During the 1990s income gaps have widened in many parts of the world. These have heightened concern about equity issues in economic policymaking. Equity and growth can be complementary; investment in human capital, for example, can boost growth in the long term. But if growth and equity do not go hand-in-hand, when and how should governments ensure that the size of the pie increases for everybody? This text brings together the views of senior policymakers and academics as well as those of religious and labour movement leaders from around the globe. They consider topics such as economic policy and equity, globalization and economic growth, and policy design and implementation.
