Book Description

January 27, 2009
Unpublished and published authors alike learn valuable trade secrets to successfully self-publish and market books from the updated second edition of The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing written by 24-year veteran publisher Linda F. Radke, owner of Five Star Publications, a producer of award-winning fiction and nonfiction manuscripts for adults and children. Authors that follow Radke s expert advice will get their work to readers faster, while maintaining creative control and making more money! While The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing gives writers the nuts and bolts of publishing, such as copywriting, acquiring an ISBN, editing, typesetting, printing and distributing, etc., in an easy-to-digest manner, it doesn t end there. Readers also receive an invaluable arsenal of conventional and sometimes unconventional methods for marketing, promoting and obtaining free publicity. In addition to updating all information to remain current with the times and ever-changing publishing industry, this second edition includes brief articles from other traditionally and self-published authors, who share their candid experiences on the front lines of promoting books.

Review

Writing the book is the easy part; the tip of the iceberg, writes self-publishing pioneer and international public speaker Dan Poynter of The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing. The real work begins when you switch hats to expend time and money on promoting the books. As you enter this new territory, this book will be your beacon. --Dan Poynter

About the Author

Since 1985, veteran publisher Linda F. Radke, owner of Five Star Publications, has been ahead of her game self-publishing before it was commonplace, partnership publishing before the rest of the world even knew what it was and producing award-winning traditional and nontraditionally published fiction and nonfiction manuscripts for adults and children. Radke s odyssey to becoming one of the nation s leading consultants in the areas of book production, marketing, publicity and distribution, began simply enough with the desire to print a few books to complement the household employment agency she owned. For Radke, who on more than one occasion has been teased about having printer s ink in her veins, the experience of publishing the books was exhilarating, prompting her to change careers and launch Five Star Publications without looking back. Eventually, Radke added services and acted as a publishing consultant for other self-publishers, ventured into traditional publishing and pioneered partnership publishing to allow her to publish more authors and make them a more integral part of the creative process of publishing. Among her many accolades, Radke is author of The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing (a Writer's Digest Book Club selection that is now into its second edition) and Promote Like a Pro: Small Budget, Big Show (a Doubleday Executive Program Book Club selection). She is a founding member of the Arizona Book Publishing Association and was named Book Marketer of the Year by Book Publicists of Southern California.

More About the Author

Since 1985, veteran publisher Linda F. Radke, owner of Five Star Publications, has been ahead of her game -- self-publishing before it was commonplace, partnership publishing before the rest of the world even knew what it was, and producing award-winning traditionally and nontraditionally published fiction and nonfiction manuscripts for adults and children.

Among her many accolades, Radke is author of The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing (a 2010 Paris Book Festival first-place winner in the "How-To" category and a Writer's Digest Book Club selection, now into its second edition) and Promote Like a Pro: Small Budget, Big Show (a Doubleday Executive Program Book Club selection). She is also a founding member of the Arizona Book Publishing Association, was named "Book Marketer of the Year" by Book Publicists of Southern California, and received numerous public relations and marketing awards from Arizona Press Women.

In addition to the honors Radke garnered for her own publications, she is responsible for producing premium quality books for clients and authors. Just since 2005, more than 35 received recognition for excellence on local, national and international levels, with a plethora of others receiving the same prior to 2005. Using her award-winning marketing and public relations skills, she also promotes her authors' books and those of others, increasing their visibility and recognition exponentially.

History:
Five Star Publications' journey to becoming one of the nation's leading consulting firms in the areas of book production, marketing, publicity, and distribution began simply enough with Radke's desire to print a few books to complement the household employment agency she owned. For Radke, who on more than one occasion has been teased about having "printer's ink in her veins," the experience of publishing the books was exhilarating, prompting her to change careers and launch Five Star Publications without looking back. Eventually, Radke added services and acted as a publishing eDistributor for other self-publishers, ventured into traditional publishing, and pioneered partnership publishing to allow her to publish more authors and make them a more integral part of the creative process of publishing.
In 2010, Five Star Scripts was launched. The spin-off company is comprised of a team of film/television producers and screenwriters who use their insiders' expertise to morph books into screenplays and pilots, and then market them to television, film, and stage producers, directors, and studios across the globe. On the flipside, Five Star Scripts also transitions scripts and screenplays into books, including writing and editing, graphic design, layout, packaging, and promotion.

The electronic book market was entered in the summer of 2010 with the birth of eStarPublish.com, which transforms a PDF, InDesign, Word or other type file into electronic files that are compatible with Amazon's Kindle, Sony, Kobo and Apple's iPod, iPad, and iPhone, and downloadable through Amazon.com, iTunes' iBookstore and others. Select books are also offered on eBookery.com, the eStarPublish's eBookstore.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone aspiring to publish their own work, April 13, 2009
This review is from: The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing (Paperback)
Even in the present economic climate that has compelled the major publishing houses to cut back the numbers of titles they produce, it has never been easier to publish a book -- or sell one. In "The Economical Guide To Self-Publishing: How To Produce And Market Your Book On A Budget", Linda F. Radke draws upon her more than 24 years of experience and expertise as a publisher whose Five Star Publications has produced award-winning and commercially successful books that were traditionally published, self-published, and published through limited partnerships. The result is a compendium of solid, practical, step-by-step information that takes the aspiring author from manuscript to published book, and then on to the tasks of marketing, promotion, publicity, and sales. "The Economical Guide To Self-Publishing" covers such issues as transforming a manuscript into a typeset book; recruiting illustrators and editors; obtaining copyrights, ISBN numbers, and bar codes; getting printing bids; publishing as a home business; developing mailing lists; even handling interviews. Of special note is what "The Economical Guide To Self-Publishing" offers by way of strategies and tactics for effectively marketing a book on a limited budget. Enhanced with an appendix listing useful publications and associations for the self-published author, "The Economical Guide To Self-Publishing" is highly recommended reading and an invaluable resource and 'do-it-yourself' reference for anyone aspiring to publish their own work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for any author, December 23, 2010
By
This review is from: The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing (Paperback)
There were five books on self-publishing already on my shelf when Linda Radke's The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing arrived but it soon became apparent that her book is the best. If you plan to self-publish your own book you need Radke's book. Even if you do not self-publish, her Economical Guide contains a lot of good contact information and marketing advice on things like radio interviews and signing in bookstores.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much More Than Self-Publishing, March 30, 2010
This review is from: The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing (Paperback)
The title of this book might have put you off. You might have said, "I'm not self-publishing." Whether you self-publish or use a traditional publisher, you can learn something from this book.

Here's one quick example from this book. It includes contributions from other writers and includes a brief article from John Kremer and Marie Kiefer called Seven-Soul Searching Commandments for Self-Publishers. I want to focus on their seventh commandment: Ten Minutes Per Day. They write, "Are you willing to spend at least ten minutes a day for the next three years marketing your book? This is a commitment that you must keep. If you are not willing to spend ten minutes each and every day marketing a book, let someone else do it--someone who believes in your book enough to spend a few minutes every day marketing it. In just ten minutes, you can make at least three contacts per day. Write influential buyers. Phone key media people. Network with contacts that can lead to other buyers, media, and associations. Three contacts per day comes out to about 1,000 contacts each year. If you make 1,000 appropriate contacts, you can't not sell books. I know that's a double negative, so I'll rephrase it. If you make 1,000 contacts per year, you will sell books. In fact, you can't miss." (page 136)

This book is packed with golden nuggets and every author can apply the information to their own book. I recommend it.
