A Good Comprehensive Guide To Econ. But Needs Some Revision,
By Kent (Iowa United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Economics + DiscoverEcon Online with Paul Solman Videos (Hardcover)
This textbook is much easier to understand than the reviewer who gave it one star makes it out to be. It's not a book where everything that is written is not going to be understandable. Although he does have a point that the author tends to become lazy and not explain certain terms in the textbook. But there is a Glossary.
The book, however, does describe many of the economic processes well and, sometimes, vividly. Sadly, in some spots, the author seems to move at a brisk pace and doesn't go into real depth about some of the economic processes and calculations. I noticed in one of the later chapters he was showing how to use the Multiplier effect and explained it all in text without bothering to show a step-by-step process of how to do it. So it gets confusing unless you have someone who knows the material extremely well show you. The author does this in several spots of the book but they are few and far between. At the end of each chapter are key terms and review questions. On top of that, a workbook is included. In this workbook, a more abstract telling of each chapter is given and some questions are asked. This workbook is very helpful and is, in my opinion, a better learning companion than the textbook itself since it gets right to the point of things. Also included is a CD-ROM with two 40 minute videos and access to the DiscoverEcon database that has more learning materials including 255 minutes worth of instructional videos; which help a lot as well especially if you are more of a visual learner like myself. This textbook is definitely worth the price; but you also get a CD-ROM and a very helpful workbook. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in studying economics or taking an economics class. This is just about as comprehensive as you are going to get in an economics textbook.

A Decent Book-Not something I would pick up on my own,

I needed this book for my macroeconomics class. The videos on the CD are interesting but not necessary to understand the book content. They don't really relate to the book but rather on current events and real life situtations. The book can be boring at times, but explains things pretty well. I wouldn't pick up this book if it wasn't for the course I'm taking. It gets confusing at certain parts.

After I studied a few chapters. I evaluate this book is a good book for a college where the course requires for online study. It came with DVD and key code so you can access online to review and do assignment. The detail concept about the economy is excellent and up-to-date of current economy.

Possibly the worst textbook I have ever used,

This book is terrible. The authors make no attempt to explain simple definitions such as "normal profit" clearly, but instead "integrate" such definitions into the text in such a way that readers are left guessing the meaning. Their explanations for various concepts are similarly vague. I honestly don't understand how this textbook made it to the 16th edition, because it should either be seriously revised or go out of print. Textbook economics should be clear, precise, and reasonably easy to understand, and McConnell and Brue have not accomplished this with their textbook. Professors - please don't put your students through the suffering of this textbook!

Delivered before expected, and the book was in better shape then they said. Overall I am very happy and will buy other textbooks from this company.
