Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Lively and accessible in style -- yet rigorous and comprehensive in content -- this text explores environmental economics from the perspective of four basic questions: How much pollution is too much? Is government up to the job? How can we do better? How can we resolve global issues? It examines a broad range of topics applicable to today's policy debates, and presents not only the "standard analysis," but also full-length treatments of important issues at the cutting edge of environmental policy debates that are usually ignored by other texts. Timely examples are integrated throughout.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some of the Best Writing in an Econ Textbook... February 21, 2012
Format:Paperback
This book is amazing in that it can deliver economics content without obscuring it in highly technical jargon or in complex mathematical equations. I love it because it is simple, and it presents great examples to back up its arguments. This is not an env. econ textbook that decides to remain neutral in the climate change debate, instead, it prefers to be realistic and acknowledge that climate change is happening and to use economics to explain what the causes and possible solutions are.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ok content. Irritating writing style. September 24, 2014

If I were to be fair, I would say this book is able to give a satisfactory foundation in basic environmental economics and it was definitely informative. Although I have not read too many other textbooks on this exact subject with which to contrast Goodstein's, I can say that for someone who has a background in economics, but is completely new to relating to environmental studies, the content was easy to follow and I did take away a lot from it.

However, my main issue is with the writing style of the author (and unfortunately it was irritating enough to make me bump this down to 2 stars). Goodstein writes as if he's trying to create a hip new way to write economic textbooks for university students. I remember the chagrin whenever he used - very often too - colloquial or slang language as awkwardly as a 40-something parent tries to use the word 'yo' to relate to their teenage kids. My entire class felt embarrassment on his behalf. If this is supposed to be taken seriously as an academic textbook, it should bloody well read like one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good price August 1, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I purchased this book at school, used, for $153 then immediately after found it on Amazon for $38. I purchased another on amazon choosing one with amazon fulfillment and got free two-day shipping with my amazon prime student account. Book arrived very quickly and was even new, not used, still in plastic. Returned the other one to my school and saved $115. Haven't read much but it looks pretty dry, interesting topic but not really a fun read.
