Product Description

The news is full of it. But most Christians know very little about it. Economics: it's everywhere, influencing everything and so rarely understood.

Economics for Everybody seeks to remedy that through an insightful and entertaining exploration of the principles, practices, and consequences of economics. Thoroughly unconventional, it links entrepreneurship with lemonade, cartoons with markets, and Charlie Chaplin with supply and demand.

If you're confused about economics, this is the place to begin. We not only explain how economics works, we show how economic freedom is directly related to religious freedom; we explore the differences between socialism, interventionism, and free markets; and we explain how stewardship is at the heart of a healthy economic system.

Includes a 234-page study guide with additional resource recommendations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your standard economics curriculum August 2, 2012
Originally posted on intoxicatedonlife.com

Economics for Everybody is a new video curriculum produced by Compass Cinema in conjunction with Ligonier Ministries. The materials are taught by Dr. R.C. Sproul, Jr., and presented in a fun and captivating way. Dr. Sproul is an engaging and knowledgeable instructor. He is particularly suited to teach this series given his teaching background and his knowledge base in the Bible, different worldviews, and economics.

Luke and I have had the opportunity to use a number of products put out by Compass Cinema and have come to expect high caliber products from this company. Compass Cinema produced a Latin course from which my son and I have learned a lot and have greatly enjoyed called Visual Latin (if you're considering a Latin curriculum, you should check out my review of this resource). Luke used the film Seek Social Justice as a supplement in teaching his Sunday school class and also plans to use their series Modern Parables this coming Fall. Needless to say, we have both been impressed by the quality of materials put out by Compass Cinema and were excited to be given the opportunity to preview their newest project.

The curriculum is comprised of a study guide with 12 chapters and corresponding teaching videos. The videos are fairly short ranging in length from 14-27 minutes long.

Economics for Everybody is really more than just an economics course: its economics meshed with Biblical theology and a smattering of history thrown in for good measure. This isn't your standard economics course. This course will teach you what the Bible says about economics and how we as Christians should view the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Review of Economics for Everyone July 28, 2012
This review was originally posted at [...] Diligence Applied Ministries

Ligonier ministries and Compass Cinema have joined together in the production of a new series entitled "Economics for Everybody." The study features Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr. and attempts to bring the practical implications of economic ideas into plain view for the everyday person. In a rich correlation of film clips from the past, cartoon like images, and clips right from the home of Dr. Sproul Jr. we get to see in simple terms how our view of God and Man dramatically affects our view of politics and ultimately affects the economic world around us.

I recently did two things with this study that I've never done before. First, I purchased a pre-order copy of the entire curriculum. Normally I just wait for things to be released because you never really know what you're going to get. However, knowing the quality of resources that Ligonier typically puts out, as well as the work of R.C. Jr. I couldn't pass up the price reduction on the pre-order. Second, after pre-ordering the entire series I was given the unique opportunity to receive access to the material before it has been released to write this review. Let me say at the outset that if you don't pre-order this study at the reduced rate of $29 you're missing out big.

This twelve part series walks viewers through the complex task of interconnecting the relationship between theology, economics, and philosophy in an incredibly simple way. The videos and images coupled with Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr.'s God given talent to simplify the difficult make this a great study for all kinds of venues and audiences.

Economics for Everybody is a biblical economics program for (almost) everybody. It is unapologetically Christian. The cornerstone of the program is "God owns everything" and the "north star principle of stewardship": God has made man his stewards who under authority of God's ownership manages property for the owner's benefit.

R.C. Sproul, Jr. is an excellent speaker (it must be genetic) gives 20-25 minute lectures. His engaging, clear explanation of basic economic concepts had me saying, "Oh! So that's what they mean by (fill in the blank)!" more than once. Each video is animated with great public domain (read: old) footage. The highlight of the series was in episode 8 with Charlie Chaplin as a metaphor for government. It was so perfect, I cried.

The 12 lessons build on each other and provide a thorough foundation for thinking biblically about economics.
Let me be clear: this is a truly counter-culture curriculum, even for many Christians. For example, the statement "God-given property rights" is unbelievably counter culture in today's redistributionist society, but it was fundamental to the understanding of our founding fathers. Like his dad, Sproul does a great job of describing a concept (say inflation) and then analyzing through a biblical world view. Be prepared to have some of your assumptions challenged, and be prepared for some hard discussions with your kids.

Speaking of kids, either this isn't primarily meant for school-age kids, or he forgets his audience. Although this would work great in as an adult study, not many middle school or high school kids are "sitting around the table with their wives and children." I laughed, but in fact it would be great for individual or group adult study, as well as for middle and high school students.
