Book Description

For the Fourth Edition of this innovative text, 2001 Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz again joins forces with one of the world's top monetary economists, Carl E. Walsh, who brings both macroeconomic expertise and teaching savvy to the project. Together, Stiglitz and Walsh thoroughly integrate contemporary economics into the traditional curriculum. Highlights of the new edition are the continued unsurpassed coverage of the economics of information and imperfect markets, and the emphasis on the critical role of capital markets in the macro economy.

Stiglitz and Walsh embrace the information revolution as an opportunity to revitalize the presentation of economics by linking fundamental concepts and basic models to examples in the "new economy."

4.0 out of 5 stars A non-econ major, July 28, 2009

I bought this book for an Intro to Micro-Econ class in college. I found that it was helpful, as it introduced and reinforced the basic principles that we were discussing in class. I wouldn't recommend it to someone outside of the classroom looking for some microecon knowledge, but it's not a bad book to study.

1.0 out of 5 stars Student Review, June 2, 2009
By
This review is from: Economics, Fourth Edition (Hardcover)
I've found this book is pretty useless, and that the only reason anyone buys it is because the authors assign these books to their classes (me being in one right now).
I haven't been able to find a single useful word in the dictionary all quarter (not even obvious basics like Fiscal Policy, Monetary Policy, full-employment model, just when i need a quick recap as im reading along). It seems to have been written from the perspective of someone who understands everything there is to know about macroeconomics and doesn't understand why anyone else won't understand it. I'm not an idiot, but the fundamentals aren't as logical as one would think.
The book also is generally fraught with contradictions which would hopelessly confuse all but the most attentive readers. I'm still rather confused about whether the 'dollar/peso' relationship is the same in nomenclature as the 'peso/dollar' relationship.. to be really technical, they should be mathematically completely different, yet the book makes no distinction. That is just one example of many. Its surprising considering that this is the fourth edition. I suppose they are economics professors, can't go wrong with publishing an extra edition every now and then..
I generally don't recommend this book to anyone who hasn't been directly assigned one, and even then you might want a different one just in case.
I'm studying for finals at the moment and so thought I'd leave a pretty honest (maybe slightly biased/pissed off) review while everything is still fresh in memory.

Seller was great. Needed the product sooner than standard shipping, and was very accommodating at getting it to me.
