I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I felt the authors bring up salient issues about the world's economic realities and offers some concrete suggestions on beginning to tackle issues of extreme poverty. I did not necessarily agree with each and every method proposed, however the book was well written and thought provoking and inspired a spirited discussion amongst peers!

Schiller is definitely a careful and thorough writer, which makes this a very comprehensive overview of poverty in the U.S. I definitely suggest it to anyone to learn more about the causes and effects of poverty and I especially suggest this for anyone going into social work, public health, education, or another social service profession. However, this book fell apart (I mean the pages literally just came apart from one another) within days of receiving it. It was a brand-new book when it arrived. Did this happen to anyone else?

I purchased this book for a class and actually read the whole thing. The book is very informative and paints a decent picture of the issue of poverty for this country. I did find that the book seemed to demonize the opinion that "Poor people don't work hard and that is why they're poor." While I personally do not feel that poverty is universally due to flawed character I do feel that the book was a little biased and didn't attempt to justify the "blame the poor" view point at all. Overall an intriguing book, but still a text book. I sold it after the class. Thank you Amazon.
