The information provided by Amazon for "The Bible. NEW REVISED STANDARD VERSION with the Apocrypha" from Hendrickson Publishers (September 2005) is confusing. Trouble starts with whether the title is "The Bible...," as shown on the picture of the cover, or "Holy Bible...," as the product page declares. The product description gives the length as 205 pages, which is an error (or indicates a book in vanishing small print!). The product description apparently supplied by the publisher is not absolutely erroneous, but it is vague and potentially very misleading.

The New Revised Standard Version was originally published in 1989-1990. It is a good translation into modern English (although criticized for too much, or too little, gender-neutral language, among other issues.) Over the years I've acquired four copies of it, variously with the plain text and with annotations, and I have no plans to acquire the Hendrickson edition as a fifth copy (although it could be a nice, not-too-expensive, edition). This review is therefore purely information about the announced list of contents, and contains no reflections of the specific edition. (For instance, I can't say anything about the binding or the quality of the paper, which is sometimes an issue.)

The "New Revised Standard" in the title indicates that the translation was intended as a replacement for the Revised Standard Version of 1952, a replacement for the American Standard Version of 1901, which itself was a variation on the (British) Revised Version of 1881-1885, intended as an "improved" version of then-current editions of the King James Version of the Bible, of 1611.

The publisher's first statement alone is untrue...the apocrypha are not in the Protestant Bible and not used by Protestants:
"Though they are regularly used in both Protestant and Roman Catholic congregations, the books of the Apocrypha are difficult to find in affordable English Bibles today--until now!"

"Translated by a multi-denominational committee"...the fact that this was translated by a multi-denominational committee vs theologians also ought to have you running.

Finally, this statement about the apocrypha also leads to the understanding that this version and publisher do not believe the apocrypha to be a true part of the Bible (inspired text), therefor the "facets" on the apocrypha in this "economy bible" could be seriously mishandled.
"ABOUT THE APOCRYPHA:
The Apocrypha is a collection of books found in the Septuagint--the Greek version of the Jewish Bible. Though not incorporated into the final, canonical version of the Hebrew scriptures, they were included in important Bible translations such as the Latin Vulgate and the original King James Version of 1611. For centuries the books of the Apocrypha have had a significant influence on Christian art, literature, and theology".

If you are looking for a Bible containing the apocrypha, move on...this is not the one...and, also contrary to this publisher's statement, there are many affordable Bibles that contain the true text and that are translated into easy to read language....just look up Catholic Study Bible and you will find many.
