Get a better night's sleep, the natural way, with the Ecotones SOUND+SLEEP machine. For roughly the same amount you'd spend for a month's supply of sleeping medication, SOUND+SLEEP provides high-quality, natural sound compositions to help you relax and treat your body to a night of deep, restorative sleep. Featuring upward-facing speakers for full-room, high-definition sound, SOUND+SLEEP delivers a rich audio experience and automatically adjusts to minimize the effect of background noises and other distractions.
Natural Sounds for Relaxation and Better Sleep
SOUND+SLEEP offers 10 distinct sound profiles that are scientifically engineered to promote relaxation, deeper sleep, and a sense of renewal. Unlike other "white noise" sound machines, SOUND+SLEEP dynamically mixes together lengthy, naturally recorded, high-definition sounds eliminating repetition. The length of the recordings is important, but that is only part of it. SOUND+SLEEP "composes" the SoundStories on the fly out of a library of high-definition sounds, so that the composition you listen to does not repeat.
Chill out to soothing sounds of the ocean, rain, brook, or a cascading waterfall with one-touch volume control. Or drift off to sleep listening to relaxing meadow, fireplace, city, or train sounds. SOUND+SLEEP also offers white, pink, and brown noise, and a meditation sound profile as other options.
Listens and Reacts to the Environment
SOUND+SLEEP is the only machine that has Adaptive Sound technology, automatically adjusting to detected background noise for uninterrupted peace and relaxation. This system continuously and automatically "listens" for ambient noise that can disrupt your calm state. Adaptive Sound technology responds to intrusive noises by remixing sound profiles and adjusting the volume to mask the noise without becoming disruptive itself.
Compact Design with Customizable Features
SOUND+SLEEP has a compact, sleek design that fits on a bedside chair or table. Operation is easy, day or night, thanks to display lights that can be turned on or off and a four-level sleep timer for gradual turn-off in 30, 60, 90, or 120 minute increments. You can play the unit all night or use the timer. The all-night continuous play option lets you keep the soothing sounds going until you're ready to get up. Three richness settings control a broad range of additional sounds for optimal sleep conditions.

The worst offenders: a large clanking steam radiator; upstairs neighbors clomping around in hard-sole shoes on a bare hard-wood floor; construction noises next door and down the block; plus the usual assortment of horn honks and blaring sirens from vehicles on the avenue two doors over.
For some years, I have used the Marsonic travel white noise machine (around $80), which was the best unit I auditioned at Hammacher-Schlemmer at the time. It offered excellent sound and admirable volume, especially for such a small device, plus two sounds, waterfall and ocean, with a tone control.
But I was interested when I heard about Adaptive Sound's first machine, the one that sells for $300. Unfortunately that price busts my budget, so I was delighted to discover that their new machine, the Duet (now known as the Sound + Sleep), sells for one-third the price.
What is their exclusive adaptive technology? Well, it is NOT a phase-inversion technology, as used in noise-cancelling headphones. In other words, the machine doesn't make intrusive sounds disappear. What it DOES do is pump up the white noise volume almost instantaneously to mask intrusive sounds, a surprisingly effective technique.
The S+S still couldn't hide the clanking radiator -- at least in waterfall mode -- but I will try again tonight with "Meditation" mode -- a steady midrange drone that a yoga class would appreciate. The S+S did, however, make the footfalls upstairs disappear, as well as the construction and street noises. That beats the Marsonic by a mile!Read more ›
The machine's Adaptive Sound Technology hears outside noises and gently raises the volume to mask these sounds. This not only keeps the unwanted noises at bay, but it also allows you to keep the selected sound sample at a reasonably low level.
There is also a 'Richness' button, which adds complexity to the sounds. So for the ocean noise, it adds an occasional seagull; for the train, a whistle, etc.
I also tried this out as a sleeping-device, using its White Noise setting. While it was somewhat effective in helping me sleep and stay asleep, I still think that for sleeping white noise, the good ol' analog Marpac still can't be beat. Though it does work nicely in conjunction with the Marpac.
The digital sounds are sampled in 18 bit rather than the traditional 16 bit rate of CDs. I can tell the difference. The sounds are richer and more textured.
Overall, this is a great machine and way above the sound quality and capabilities of its digital competitors. My complaints are minor, and hopefully some of these issues will be addressed in a future version:
1. Volume Control: I would prefer a dial control rather than a push-button.Read more ›
First, you can't judge these things straight off. You have to spend time with them. Your brain will try to find patterns, and once it does, the sound machine can itself become an irritant. With this one, the white noise is still white noise after a month. No kidding, this qualifies as a Major Achievement.
Second, the "adaptive" sound setting works. As background noise levels change, so does the audio volume of the machine -- the same thinking as is used on noise-cancelling headphones I assume. (It has a microphone to sample the background, and then it adjusts for that.) This doesn't handle everything - an upstairs neighbor's high heels for instance - but it does work for the bleeping and screeching of the garbage trucks, no mean feat.
There's a reassuring attention-to-detail in the design. There are two speakers: a woofer and tweeter which can actually be heard. Separate functions have separate buttons, which means this can be used easily by human beings. (Interfaces well with wetware) Where appropriate, the buttons typically have leds that light to show the settings. And, I don't know if the Display button is unique, but it ought to be mandatory for all electronics. Press *Display* and it will turn off all the machine's lights after 15 seconds.
Is this perfect? No. But in my experience, it's as close to perfect as actually exists. Strongly recommended.
