Okay for a Starter Brush Set...Eco Friendly is Nice, January 5, 2010
This review is from: Ecotools Bamboo Brush Set,5 Piece (Misc.)
I really wanted to like this set after reading so many positive reviews, however, this set is just okay, but has positive aspects.
First off, I really like the concept of developing eco friendly products and feel EcoTools has taken a great step in this endeavor. Bamboo is a sustainable resource and using recycled aluminum is also a nice plus. I also like the use of taklon for its bristles, as no animals were harmed in the making of these brushes, so that is another nice factor. After washing each brush, I did not notice any shedding, nor have I noticed shedding since using them. Pricing on these brushes is awesome! For the first time there is an eco friendly product out there that does not cost more than its non-eco friendly competitors.
Given its eco friendly position and the anti-cruelty aspect, it pains me to be critical of this set, however, it has its issues people should be aware of. In this set, you get a blush brush, eyeshadow brush, concealor brush, eye liner brush and brow brush. So, you get 5 brushes and also a brush roll, which is also eco-friendly. The synthetic material used is called Taklon, which is very soft to the touch.
The blush brush is so soft and feels nice on my cheek. It even tapers so that one can even use it to contour the check. However, I just do not feel that it picks up enugh product, which is a shame, as there is so much going for it. The concealor and shadow brushes are ok and get the job done. However, I find the shadow brush is not very precise. The concealor brush is not bad, but I only use it for my eye area, so I cannot comment on it as a face brush. The brow/lash brush is fine, I do not use it though, so gave it to my mom and she likes it.
My favorite brush out of the bunch is the eye liner brush. It is very thin, so you can get a very thin line from it and build it up to add a bit more drama. However, when I want a heavier line, I will use this one to line my lid for precision and then turn to a thicker liner brush to add more drama if I am in the mood. Another reason why I like this brush is that I have sensitive eyes and this brush is very gentle. The drawback to this brush is that its bristles do not keep their shape, so I have to shape the brush when I am using it. However, I am willing to do this, as this brush gives me a thin line and is very gentle.
Overall, I think EcoTools is onto something great and think this set would be good for someone on a tight budget or as a starter brush set for someone just learning about makeup. I also think its Taklon bristles are great for people with sensitive skin and eyes, so definitely worth checking into, especially if you find one or two brushes out of the set you really like. Again, I think it is great that we now have Earth and animal friendly options to try.
