5.0 out of 5 stars Junie Morrison style Players...
...quantum pocket time. That is, you had to have been there to know. Nineteen seventy three, we were playing the heck outta Morrison's/Ohio Player's "Ecstacy" with that just right funky guitar and bass and organ intro by Sugar, Jones and Junie and always complained that at 2 minutes and thirty some odd seconds it was too short... those of us with the album...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good album, not great
While recomended, "Ecstasy" is not a good starting point for those seeking early Westbound era Ohio Players. This album has tremendous strong points, but overall it lacks consistency and focus. I like this album. You should buy this album. But "Pain" and the compilation entitled "Orgasm" should be considered first. If you are new to Westbound...

...quantum pocket time. That is, you had to have been there to know. Nineteen seventy three, we were playing the heck outta Morrison's/Ohio Player's "Ecstacy" with that just right funky guitar and bass and organ intro by Sugar, Jones and Junie and always complained that at 2 minutes and thirty some odd seconds it was too short... those of us with the album laughed at the chutzpah associated with the title of the opening jam on side 2--"Food Stamps Y'all"...the slow cut in the streets off the album was "Silly Billy", a little mellower than that other great slow jam from the "Pleasure" album "Varee is Love", but hey, back then, a new Players jam was the talk of the streets...after this the Players had a Westbound Records greatest hits album and then they moved to Mercury Records to put out "Skin Tight"--they lost Junie in the transition, but shortly afterward his Player stint, he worked with Clinton and P-funk and did his own work, most notably the album "Bread Alone"...this album "Ecstacy" has some of the Players best Westbound Records work on it--it is hard to find, a rare treasure for true funk fans...

5.0 out of 5 stars True Funk Ecstasy!, November 22, 2007

Greatness from cover art to music. The first song, "Ecstasy", is just awesome, among the best songs I've ever heard.

The Westbound catalog of The Ohio Players is a secret that needs to be shared. I do not know if this particular recording is the band's best, but it belongs on someone's list of funk/soul masterpieces.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Players standing on the verge......, September 4, 2009

This album was a great follow-up to the 'Pleasure' LP. The Players were well on the way to developing the sound that would carry them to the top of the charts in the mid 70's. Even though Junie Morrison was still in the group at this time, some of the falsettos sound a lot like Billy Beck. I always wondered if Beck played an uncredited role on this album. This album was a great finale to the Players' Westbound era.

I like this album. You should buy this album. But "Pain" and the compilation entitled "Orgasm" should be considered first. If you are new to Westbound Records, The Ohio Players is going to have to wait- Funkadelic's "Funkadelic" is most definately THE best funk album of all time and a necessary introduction to The Ohio Players' "Pain", "Pleasure", and "Ecstasy" recordings.

4.0 out of 5 stars the Junie Morrison Era Ohio Players were tight, March 9, 2003
This review is from: Ecstasy (Audio CD)
the Westbound Era Ohio Players were Double the Funk&Groove.while they still had There Funk Chops with Mercury on Westbound they came prepared to straight up battle&the jams on this Set prove that&more.the title cut"Food Stamps Y'all" &other cuts here showcase the Rawness&Gut-Bucked Funk of the Players.Junie Morrison is Banging on the Boards.many of His Grooves made there way on many of the early 90's Rap/Hip-Hop Cuts.
